Firsts
  • Silvers Rayleigh reveals to the Straw Hats that he was the FIRST MATE of the Roger Pirates — 'I was the first mate. I'm Silvers Rayleigh' (pp. 8-9). The coating craftsman they hired is the Pirate King's right hand.
  • Hatchan and Rayleigh's friendship is explained: Hachi saved Rayleigh's life 20 years ago when Rayleigh was lost at sea; they stayed close until Hachi joined the Sun Pirates (p. 9).
  • MAJOR Roger-era reveal: Gold Roger was NOT captured — he TURNED HIMSELF IN. Roger was afflicted with an incurable terminal illness ~4 years before his execution; the World Government reported it as a capture to show off their power (pp. 10, 13-14).
  • Crocus, the Twin Cape lighthouse-keeper and one of the land's best doctors, served as the Roger Pirates' SHIP DOCTOR for the crew's final ~3 years, joining to ease Roger's pain and conquer the Grand Line; he boarded because he was searching for 'a certain band of pirates' (the Rumbar Pirates / Laboon connection) (pp. 11-12).
  • Roger's crew was conquering the Grand Line while terminally ill; Roger disbanded the Roger Pirates after conquering the Grand Line, and everyone went their separate ways; ~1 year after disbanding he turned himself in (p. 13).
  • Rayleigh recounts Roger's execution at Rogue Town (Loguetown), East Blue — Roger's birthplace — and his last words ('My treasure? You can have it if you want it. Go find it! I left all the riches of the world there'), which intentionally ignited the Great Age of Pirates (pp. 14-15).
  • Shanks AND Buggy were both APPRENTICE pirates ('trainees') on the Roger Pirates' ship (p. 17).
  • Rayleigh met Shanks on Sabaody about TEN years ago, by chance — Shanks's trademark straw hat and his left arm were already gone; Shanks told Rayleigh about a kid (Luffy) saying the exact same words Roger once said (pp. 16-17).
  • Bartholomew Kuma, a Warlord of the Sea, is attacking Sabaody indiscriminately; rookie captains Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law (with the talking bear Bepo) clash with the Marines and resolve to force their way past Kuma (pp. 2-5).
  • Admiral KIZARU arrives at Sabaody (Grove 27 Port) — first on-page appearance — descending onto a cannonball as a streak of light: 'I've arrived, so please respond accordingly' (pp. 18-19).

Summary

While the rookie crews tangle with the Marines, the Warlord Bartholomew Kuma appears and attacks Sabaody indiscriminately; Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law (with his talking bear, Bepo) reluctantly resolve to break through him. Across the archipelago, Duval’s renamed gang — the Rosy Life Riders — see the Straw Hats off and return their stolen belongings before the crew carries the badly wounded Hatchan to Shakky’s Rip-off Bar. There the coating craftsman “Ray” drops a bombshell: he is Silvers Rayleigh, the first mate of the Roger Pirates. Over drinks he tells the crew the true story of the Pirate King — that Roger turned himself in rather than being captured, dying of an incurable illness whose pain the doctor Crocus eased through the crew’s final three years; that Roger disbanded his crew and walked to the scaffold at Rogue Town, where his last words intentionally lit the Great Age of Pirates; and that both Shanks and Buggy were apprentices aboard his ship. Rayleigh adds that he met Shanks here on Sabaody ten years ago, and that Shanks spoke of a boy saying the very same words Roger once did. The reverie is shattered when Admiral Kizaru descends on Sabaody in a streak of light.
