Why this matters
The chapter-100 milestone is structurally Oda’s mission-statement page. The fact that the chapter opens with a posthumous-Roger-voice articulating an inherited-will doctrine installs the series’s metaphysical thesis at the saga-closing milestone.
The technique combines three on-display Oda-playbook tools:
- chekhov-explicit — the inherited strength of will phrase IS the seed; it is later directly weaponized as the Will of D. canon.
- dialogue-from-dead-character — Roger has been dead for 22 years (per Smoker Ch. 99); his voice is operative as a posthumous-attribution overlay on the protagonist’s introduction-to-the-Grand-Line walking-shot.
- parallel-arc-structure — Roger-Luffy parallelism is foregrounded compositionally: Roger died on the Loguetown scaffold (Ch. 1); Luffy survives the same scaffold (Ch. 100) under Roger’s articulated doctrine.
The D. initial is not yet textually named in the monologue — the doctrine is attributed to Gold Roger King of the Pirates. But the inherited-strength-of-will phrasing is the direct seed of the Will-of-D. canon that pays off across the rest of the series.
