Why this family matters (plot weight)
Revealed on-page at Ch. 550: Gol D. Roger fathered a child with Portgaz D. Rouge. The son, Ace, took his mother’s surname (“Portgas/Portgaz D. Ace,” born Gol D. Ace) to hide his paternity. Roger was executed one year and three months before Ace’s birth; Rouge died bearing him. The infant was entrusted to the Marine “Hero” Garp, who raised him (foster-guardian, not blood). The first on-page confirmation that the Pirate King left a living heir — the load-bearing payoff of the standing “did Roger have descendants?” question.
Maternal surname (Portgas) — folded here, not forked
The maternal surname Portgas is recorded inside this note (no separate Families/Portgas note). In the Marineford birth flashback (Ch. 551), Ace’s mother Portgaz D. Rouge gives her son her own family name, Portgas, rather than his father’s “Gol,” to hide Gold Roger’s bloodline from the World Government — so “Portgas/Portgaz D. Ace” (born Gol D. Ace). Ace: “I owe the name Portgas a great debt. I got it from my mother.” (p. 7). The load-bearing throughline is the D. middle initial the line shares with D.
