- **LOAD-BEARING — *D.* as a category/lineage uttered on-page by Robin to Luffy** (p. 5). Miss All Sunday, looking down at Luffy in the desert: *'Why...do you fight? As one of those...whose name is "D."'* Luffy: *'"D"?'* Robin: *'...Just who...are you people?!'* — first on-page articulation of *those whose name is D.* as a categorical group rather than as individual letter-drops. The Will-of-D mystery, structurally installed across Ch. 100 (Roger inherited-will) → Ch. 105 (Dragon's D) → Ch. 154 (Kureha: *the will of 'D.' lives on*) → Ch. 157 (Portgaz D. Ace), is here named **as a recognized faction** by an outsider — and that outsider is Nico Robin, the future Strawhat archaeologist with deep historical knowledge. **First on-page evidence that the D-clan is known-as-a-group to anyone outside the Marines/Kureha tier.** Robin asks the question Luffy himself doesn't know to ask. Pre-loads Robin's forward-canon role as the D-clan's historian-witness.
- **Robin saves Luffy's life with an *Accelegator* mount** (pp. 4-7). Robin finds Luffy near death in the desert (dehydrated, half-buried in sand outside Yuba), drops his straw hat in front of him (*'I guess it's a waste of time to ask.'*), and provides him an **Accelegator — *(the second fastest animal in Alabasta)*** with a *bento*-style food parcel. Luffy revives at the smell of meat (*'MEAT!!'*, p. 7) and Robin asks her D-clan question. **First on-page Robin-aids-Luffy beat** — the future Strawhat archaeologist saves the captain at his lowest point. Pays off Robin's Ch. 165-170 *I-help-the-protagonist-crew-at-first-meeting* register expansion.
- **Accelegator — *(the second fastest animal in Alabasta)* — named on-page** (p. 7 caption). A large armadillo-style desert-runner with a saddle-pack; second-tier-fastest after Karoo's Spot-Billed Duck (forward-canon). First on-page Alabasta-fauna ranking-caption that pre-establishes the Karoo-Supersonic-Duck-Squadron as #1.
- **Igaram returns to Alabasta — solo, in Nanohana**, racing to deliver an urgent message ahead of the *final clash* (pp. 8-9). Wearing his decoy-Igarappoi-style curly-wig and travel-coat; runs through the bombed-out Nanohana streets (*'Please, let me be in time!!!'*). **First on-page Igaram-deployed-as-solo-Royal-Guard-courier in Alabasta** — pre-loads his arc-end role at Alubarna palace court.
- **The *five-hour strategic clock* is set** (p. 9). Caption-box on a strategic-clock visual (analog-clock face overlaid on the Alubarna-Rebel-Forces map): *'Approximately five hours until...the rebel forces reach Alubarna.'* The chapter is structured around the convergence-countdown — every faction is racing the clock to Alubarna. Operation Utopia's set-piece climax is now timestamped.
- **Crocodile's *Once the sandstorms end, the rain will return — like always* doctrine** (p. 9). Crocodile on-page in the Rainbase shadow: *'Not to worry!! Once the sandstorms end, the rain will return. Like always.'* **First on-page Crocodile-as-public-relief-promiser doctrine** — the warlord cynically tells the kingdom the drought-end is imminent, knowing forward-canon that his Dance Powder operation has caused the entire crisis. The *like always* gaslighting register is the structural mirror of his Ch. 0165-0166 motive-articulation.
- **Pincers — a *Crab Mover* — Eyelashes-the-camel summons to ferry the Strawhats across the Sandora River** (pp. 10-13). Captioned: *'CRAB MOVERS ARE CREATURES OF THE DESERT. THEY HATE THE WATER.'* Sanji uses a *swimsuit-photo* on Nami (and on Vivi-as-bait) to lure Pincers into top-speed water-walking (*'PINCERS LIKES DANCING GIRLS!!'* / *'IT'S THE POWER OF LOVE!!'*). **First on-page Sandora-River crossing methodology** — establishes the crab-mover-via-attraction transit grammar.
- **Sandoran Catfish — caption-debut as a *rare Sandoran creature*** (pp. 14-15). Massive whisker-mouthed catfish breaches under Pincers (*SPLOOSH*), *favorite food is man* — apex Sandora-River predator. Kung-Fu Jugons (forward-canon dugongs) leap to the Strawhats' rescue and dispatch the catfish.
- **LOAD-BEARING — Kung Fu Jugons recognize the Strawhats as *disciples of our master* and serve them as Luffy's by-extension followers** (pp. 15-16). The Jugon pack: *'They're saying they couldn't let anything happen to their master's disciples...'* / *'Uh...we're not Luffy's disciples...'* / *'All the same, they're a godsend!'* They defeat the catfish, then form a swim-platform that ferries the Strawhats across the rest of the river. **Cashes the Ch. 0113 Luffy-defeats-Kung-Fu-Jugon-and-recruits-it-as-disciple seed at the cross-arc tier** — the dugong-disciple-network is operationally active across Alabasta saga. Pre-loads the forward-canon Apis-arc / Ch. 67-69 Luffy-recruits-an-animal pattern's institutional reach.
- **LOAD-BEARING — Karoo arrives with the *Supersonic Duck Squadron* — Alabasta Kingdom's Swiftest Unit** (pp. 16-17). After landing on the far bank with three hours to go to Alubarna, Karoo (caption: *'SQUADRON LEADER KAROO — SUPERSONIC DUCK SQUADRON (ALABASTA KINGDOM'S SWIFTEST UNIT)'*) arrives leading a flock of giant racing-spotbill ducks. **Karoo's military-leadership identity is on-page canonized for the first time** — he's not just Vivi's mount, he's a Royal-Guard-affiliated squadron-leader. Each Strawhat will ride a duck for the final dash to Alubarna. Cross-cuts the Ch. 0159 *Karoo solo desert courier mission* — the duck-network was always there, Karoo was operating within an institutional structure off-page.
- **Baroque Works ambush-team assembled at Alubarna's East Gate** (pp. 18-19). Six Officer-tier agents are positioned one hour before the converging forces arrive: **Mr. 1, Ms. Doublefinger, Mr. 4, Ms. Merry Christmas, Bon Clay (Mr. 2)** — visible in the panels — debating ambush strategy. Bon Clay spins in his swan-pose (*'STOP SPINNING, YOU SWAN!!'*) and articulates: *'When it comes to deception, I'm second to none!!!'* — first on-page Bon Clay-as-deception-specialist self-articulation. Mr. 1 shows the torn photograph of Vivi (***SRIP***): *'Anyway, the most important thing is to get rid of the princess, right?'* — first on-page Mr. 1-articulates-the-prime-target doctrine. The photo-tear-handed-to-Bon-Clay is the **forward-canon pre-tell of the Bon Clay impersonating Vivi during the Alubarna chase**.
- **Vivi-was-once-a-Baroque-Works-agent acknowledged at Officer-Agent tier** (p. 18). Mr. 1 (or peer): *'That's right!! Princess Vivi was once a Baroque Works agent herself!! Six of our top agents are an ambush?'* — first on-page acknowledgment by the Officer Agents that **Vivi-as-Ms-Wednesday is one of their own**. Justifies the six-agent ambush composition as appropriately proportioned to an ex-Officer-Agent's tactical knowledge of BW methods.

Summary
Cover-art (p. 1) — Volume 20 frontispiece — Alabasta Animal Land: a smiling young woman in a “GOLD” t-shirt + sarong stands at the lakeside of a fishing-pond resort, with three small Spot-Billed-Duck-like creatures wearing GO / GOLD baseball caps. Lakeside cabin labeled GOLD; reed-thatched poolside; carp-shaped float-stripes in the water. Vol. 20 frontispiece set-piece — not a continuing cover-arc beat but a one-page magazine-style splash.
In-story (pp. 2-7) — at the outskirts of Yuba (p. 2 wide-shot — WOOOoooo… sandstorm howl, Yuba skyline in the distance), Luffy crawls through the dunes near death (HUFF… HUFF…), tortured by his abandoned Yuba mission (broken-panel inset memories: YUBA WILL DIE. / I OUTCLASS YOU AS A PIRATE! / …PROTECT PRINCESS VIVI!?! / IF I’M NO MATCH FOR HER, WHO CAN…). His straw hat blows off (SWUSH… SLIP!); a long-shadowed figure approaches and WOOF-blocks the wind. Miss All Sunday stands over him (FOUND YOU! / I guess it’s a waste of time to ask.) and drops his hat onto his face (PLOP…).
The Robin-Luffy exchange (pp. 5-6) is load-bearing for the entire D-clan mystery:
- Robin: “Oh, so you’ve come to? What have you done with Princess Vivi?!” — (Luffy silent)
- Robin: ”…Things will be different this time!! Now that I know what your powers are…”
- Robin: “He is, after all, the swashbuckling pirate…who brought your precious princess home.”
- Robin: “But you’re just in time. Why don’t you help that kid?” / “Be careful. You’re hurt worse than you think.”
- Robin (the load-bearing line, p. 5): “Why…do you fight? …As one of those…whose name is ‘D.’? …Just who…are you people?!” — first on-page utterance of those whose name is D. as a categorical lineage by a non-Marine, non-Kureha character.
- Luffy: “‘D’?” — captain doesn’t know the lineage-frame.
Robin provides him a saddled Accelegator — (the second fastest animal in Alabasta) (p. 7 caption) and a bento food-package (GRMM GRMM…); Luffy revives at the smell of meat (DOOM!! / MEAT!! / ?!!). Robin: “Yes, your princess is alive. She’s on her way to Alubarna even as we speak. I don’t know what’ll happen to her now, though…considering the situation.”
Cut to Nanohana (p. 8) — Igaram (in his curly-wig + travel coat, MI-MI-MI-MI-MI ♪ humming) runs through the bombed-out city streets (“Princess Vivi and those pirates must’ve made it here safely. I saw their ship.” / “So the final clash has begun…”) — “Please, let me be in time!!! I must hurry…”. Strategic-clock graphic (p. 9): an analog clock-face overlaid with a map-arrow connecting the Rebel-Forces marker to Alubarna — “…the rebel forces reach Alubarna. Approximately five hours until…Time is running out…” In Rainbase, Crocodile (cloaked silhouette, p. 9): “Not to worry!! Once the sandstorms end, the rain will return. Like always.”
At Yuba (p. 10), Toh-Toh shouts at the storm (“DO YOUR WORST, YOU BLASTED SANDSTORM!!” / “YOU’LL NEVER DEFEAT YUBA!!”) — followed by an enormous BOOM… and a wide-shot of the desolate buried town.
The Strawhats reach the Sandora River (pp. 11-16). Strategic map (p. 11) shows their CURRENT LOCATION between Rainbase and Alubarna, with the Sandora River as the obstacle. They’ve ridden a giant crab named Pincers (a Crab Mover, caption: “CRAB MOVERS ARE CREATURES OF THE DESERT. THEY HATE THE WATER.”) but with the river ahead they have four hours to go and 30 miles of water plus 30 more miles of desert beyond. Sanji solves it: “I’VE GOT IT! PINCERS LIKES DANCING GIRLS!!” — SWIP — flashes a swimsuit-photo (HUBBA HUBBA…) and the comic register fires. Chopper: “IT’S THE POWER OF LOVE!!”; the crab accelerates to top-speed water-walking (SHWOOM!!). Mid-river a Sandoran Catfish breaches (SPLOOSH…, “AND IT’S FAVORITE FOOD IS MAN!”) and grabs Pincers — but Kung Fu Jugons (the dugongs from Ch. 113) leap to the rescue (AAAH!! / AR-F!!!, “THE KUNG FU JUGONS!!!”). The dugongs drive off the catfish; the speaking-Strawhat realizes they recognize them (“Uh…we’re not Luffy’s disciples… ♪” / “They’re saying they couldn’t let anything happen to their master’s disciples…”); the Jugon pack forms a swim-platform that ferries the Strawhats across (“All the same, they’re a godsend!”).
Strategic map cuts (p. 17): “With the help of all Alabasta’s wildlife…the crew managed to cross the Sandora River… and resume their dash for Alubarna. Time remaining… three hours.” But two Strawhats can ride Eyelashes-the-camel, and the rest need transit. “It’s going to be close. I’m not sure even Eyelashes can get us there in time!” — then a WO Ooo… dust-cloud approaches, and QUACK!!! announces Karoo — “And he’s brought the Supersonic Duck Squadron with him!!!” Caption: “SQUADRON LEADER KAROO — SUPERSONIC DUCK SQUADRON (ALABASTA KINGDOM’S SWIFTEST UNIT)” — six giant racing-spotbills lined up beside Karoo.
Cut to Alubarna’s East Gate (pp. 18-19) — caption “ONE HOUR BEFORE THE CLASH AT ALUBARNA’S EAST GATE” — six Baroque-Works Officer-tier agents assembled at an ornate stone archway debating ambush positions: Mr. 1 (text 壱/ONE on chest, hooded, leaning against an arch — silent through most of the exchange), Ms. Doublefinger (afro, low-cut top, sun-symbol pendant — leaning on Mr. 1’s shoulder), Mr. 4 (rotund, white-suited, holding a baseball-bat with his face-laughing HAHA), Ms. Merry Christmas (elderly, frizzy-haired in a striped uniform, “YOU’RE TOO SLOW!! OH, MY BACK!!” / “WE’LL GO FIRST!!”), and Bon Clay (Mr. 2, in his swan-cape, spinning — “STOP SPINNING, YOU SWAN!! HO HO HO…”) who pronounces “WHEN IT COMES TO DECEPTION, I’M SECOND TO NONE!!!” The conversation establishes: (i) “That’s right!! And Princess Vivi was once a Baroque Works agent herself!! …Six of our top agents are an ambush?” — Vivi’s BW-officer-tier knowledge justifies a six-agent ambush; (ii) “The enemy is a band of pirates who have already eliminated…Where do we set up an ambush?” / “Here’s the situation.” / “The west gate.” — there are multiple gates; the ambush split. Mr. 1 (chapter-end, p. 19) hands Bon Clay a torn photograph of Vivi (SRIP): “Anyway, the most important thing is to get rid of the princess, right?!” — forward-canon pre-tell of Bon Clay impersonating Vivi during the Alubarna chase.
SBS Question Corner (p. 20): Oda answers (1) Shonen Jump’s readership is 30% female — boys, girls, old guys, and old ladies are all welcome; (2) LOAD-BEARING — Baroque Works is named for the Baroque style of European art (named after Bach, whom Igaram visually resembles): “That’s right. …Baroque is a style of art, literature and music that became popular in Europe during the 17th century. …the baroque style was unnecessarily ostentatious and excessively ornamental. That’s why Baroque Works is made up of such flamboyant characters.”
New reveals
- LOAD-BEARING — Robin asks Luffy: Why do you fight? As one of those whose name is “D.”? (p. 5). First on-page utterance of those whose name is D. as a categorical group/lineage by a non-Marine non-Kureha character. The Will-of-D mystery is now formally a faction-question; Robin is positioned as a knower-of-the-D-lineage before her Strawhat-recruitment — pre-loads her forward-canon Ohara-historian backstory and Saul-told-her-the-D-lineage-will-live-on reveal (Ch. 391).
- Robin saves Luffy (pp. 4-7). Drops his straw hat in front of his dying body; provides an Accelegator mount + bento food-pack; revives him. First on-page Robin-aids-Luffy beat.
- Accelegator — (the second fastest animal in Alabasta) — named on-page (p. 7 caption). First Alabasta-fauna ranking-caption.
- Igaram is back in Alabasta (pp. 8-9). Running through Nanohana solo in his curly-wig, racing the Operation-Utopia clock.
- Five-hour strategic clock set (p. 9) — “approximately five hours until…the rebel forces reach Alubarna.”
- Crocodile’s Once the sandstorms end, the rain will return — like always doctrine (p. 9) — first on-page Crocodile-as-public-relief-promiser gaslighting beat.
- Toh-Toh-stays-at-Yuba doctrine reaffirmed under storm (p. 10) — “YOU’LL NEVER DEFEAT YUBA!! DO YOUR WORST, YOU BLASTED SANDSTORM!!”
- Pincers the Crab Mover — Eyelashes summons it to ferry the Strawhats across Sandora River (pp. 11-13). Caption: “CRAB MOVERS ARE CREATURES OF THE DESERT. THEY HATE THE WATER.” Sanji’s swimsuit-photo “POWER OF LOVE” lure accelerates the crab to top-speed water-walking.
- Sandoran Catfish — caption-debuted as a rare desert-river apex predator (pp. 14-15). Whisker-mouthed; “favorite food is man.”
- Kung Fu Jugons recognize the Strawhats as disciples of our master (pp. 15-16). Defeat the catfish; ferry the Strawhats across. Cross-arc Ch. 113 dugong-disciple-recruitment pays off operationally.
- Karoo arrives with the Supersonic Duck Squadron — Alabasta Kingdom’s Swiftest Unit (pp. 16-17). Caption canonizes Karoo as Squadron Leader. Karoo’s military-leadership identity is first on-page named here.
- Six Baroque Works Officer Agents at Alubarna East Gate (pp. 18-19). Mr. 1, Ms. Doublefinger, Mr. 4, Ms. Merry Christmas, Bon Clay (Mr. 2) assembled for the ambush. (Mr. 3 not visible — he’s still detained at Crocodile’s casino-aquarium per Ch. 0166.) The ambush is six-agent-strong because Vivi was once one of them.
- Bon Clay’s When it comes to deception, I’m second to none!!! doctrine (p. 19). First on-page Bon Clay-as-deception-specialist self-articulation. Pre-loads the photo-handoff impersonation set-piece.
- Bon Clay receives the torn Vivi photo (p. 19, SRIP). Mr. 1: “Anyway, the most important thing is to get rid of the princess, right?!” Forward-canon pre-tell of the Bon Clay-impersonates-Vivi Alubarna chase.
- Vivi-as-ex-Baroque-Works-agent acknowledged at Officer-Agent tier (p. 18). The ambush composition is sized to her insider-knowledge.
- SBS — Baroque Works named for the Baroque style of European art, after Bach (Igaram’s visual model) (p. 20). Oda confirms the etymology and the unnecessarily ostentatious / excessively ornamental design-rule for the Officer-Agent flamboyance.

Open questions raised
- How does Robin know about the D-clan as a lineage / faction? Robin asks the D. question with apparent prior knowledge of the lineage’s existence. Forward-canon: Ohara-archaeologist backstory; Saul told her the will of D will live on (Ch. 391). The chapter shows her knowing the lineage exists before any on-page Strawhat-recruitment.
- Why is Robin saving Luffy at all? She is operationally a Baroque Works VP. Her save the protagonist while the boss is engineering a kingdom-conquest is operationally treasonous — the first on-page operationally-treasonous Robin beat against Crocodile. Forward-canon: she joins the Strawhats. The chapter pre-loads the Crocodile-betrayal her arc-end reveals.
- What happens to Toh-Toh in the storm? The chapter cuts away from Yuba after the BOOM and wide-shot of the buried town. Forward-canon: Toh-Toh survives but Yuba is essentially destroyed.
- How does Igaram’s solo mission tie into the Alubarna defense? Igaram is running through Nanohana, not toward Alubarna directly — implies he has a Nanohana-specific objective.
- Why does Crocodile publicly promise the rain will return? The like always tag is gaslighting — the warlord knows the drought is his engineered Dance Powder operation. The on-page Crocodile-as-public-figure register pre-loads the kingdom-conqueror’s trust as the most overrated thing doctrine made operational.
- Why is Mr. 3 not at the Alubarna ambush? The visible ambush corps is five (Mr. 1, Ms. Doublefinger, Mr. 4, Ms. Merry Christmas, Bon Clay) — Mr. 3 is presumably still in Crocodile’s casino-aquarium per Ch. 0166. The six top agents line implies a sixth member off-frame in this chapter — likely Mr. 5 + Miss Valentine pair or a yet-unrevealed Officer-Agent.
- What was on the torn Vivi photo? Bon Clay receives only the torn half — what is on the other half, and who has it? Forward-canon: Mr. 1 / Bon Clay split the photo to coordinate the impersonation.
