Chapter 303: The Wealthy Pirate Gang

Summary

A transitional, arc-seam chapter. On Jaya, the Saruyama Alliance (Cricket, Masira, Shoujou) abandons their seafloor search for El Dorado after the Straw Hats proved the gold was in the sky, and pledges to follow Cricket wherever he leads (pp. 2-3). In Mock Town, Donquixote Doflamingo — a Seven Warlords member with a bounty over 300 million — has brutally beaten Bellamy and Sarquiss; the broken, weeping Bellamy begs for one more chance to follow him, but Doflamingo coldly rejects him from his crew and floors him with an unseen force, proclaiming that an “unmatched, unstoppable new age” of “only real pirates” is upon them (pp. 4-9). Out on the Blue Sea, the Straw Hats have splashed down from Skypiea intact and reflect on their dreamlike sky adventure; they ride a giant wave back onto the ocean, divvy up the Skypiea treasure, and — facing a Going Merry that is “falling apart” — Luffy decides the crew must add a carpenter/shipwright who can protect their ship and home (pp. 10-16). At Grand Line Navy Headquarters, officers panic that Aokiji has wandered off again on his bicycle “to the ocean”; the chapter closes on a Marine eyeing Luffy’s “Monkey D.” wanted poster (“not an honest fellow in the whole family”) as the narration names Admiral Aokiji, the greatest power in the Navy — shown only as a tiny distant figure cycling across the sea (p. 17).
