Summary

The chapter opens the Ohara flashback (20 years before the present). On the island of Ohara, at the base of the great Tree of Knowledge, Professor Clover — Head Librarian and authority on archaeology — certifies the child Nico Robin as a scholar, while warning her she must understand what it means to be an archaeologist (pp. 2-4). Robin confesses her true wish: to research the Poneglyph and unravel “the void in history” — the 100 blank years — which Clover declares a forbidden taboo and a crime (pp. 4-5). Caught studying in the basement at night with the other scholars, Robin is told the deciphering work is the law of Ohara, conducted at the risk of their lives (pp. 5-6). Robin’s mother Olvia has already been captured (WANTED poster shown, p. 7), and the scholars fear Robin is following in her mother’s footsteps. Wandering the shore, Robin discovers a beached castaway giant who introduces himself as Jaguar D. Saul and laughs with his signature “Dereshishi!” (p. 1 title splash echoes it). Over several days Robin secretly brings the wounded, hiding Saul food; he teaches her that “when you’re hurting, laugh” (pp. 12-18). Meanwhile aboard a Navy ship out at sea in the West Blue, Spandine, the CP9 Director of 20 years earlier, has been summoned toward “Ohara… Opera… whatever,” dismissive and annoyed (p. 18). The scholars spot a Navy ship anchored off the coast and resolve to notify all scholars and take precautions (p. 19) — even as Robin, happy, laughs Saul’s “Dereshi shi shi” laugh (pp. 19-20).
