The first on-page racial-self-narration by fishmen comes in Ch. 71 page 6, delivered by an unnamed Arlong-Pirates officer to a bound Zoro:
“We fish-men are evolved humans who have developed the ability to breathe seawater. Our fish-like powers make us far superior to you!!”“We fish-men are the lords of all creation!!! We can do a lot of things that no human can!!”“A human fighting the fish-men… is fighting the power of nature itself!!!”
The self-theory is a hierarchical-superiority claim, not a taxonomic-distinction claim:
Fishmen self-name as evolved-humans-with-seawater-breathing, not as non-humans.
Strength multiplier (10×, Ch. 70 page 9) is here re-framed as evolutionary-superiority, not external statistic.
Tier-claim (Grand-Line-tier, Ch. 70 page 10) is here extended into a fighting-nature cosmic-claim.
Linguistic taboo: half-fish is a slur (Ch. 71 pages 5-6) — fishmen reject the partial-fish-partial-human taxonomy in favor of evolved-humans-fully-integrated-with-fish-traits.
recent-chapter forward-read: the Fish-Man Island saga (Ch. 603+) will reveal this self-theory is fish-man racist propaganda — historically, fishmen and merfolk are a separate-and-coequal race that has been enslaved by humans and is now self-mythologizing the supremacist inversion. The Ch. 71 doctrine is the propaganda-in-the-act-of-formation moment; Hody Jones inherits it at maximum intensity, Otohime and Jinbe oppose it.
