Carmel casts herself as a biblical/pastoral shepherd and her orphans as her 'lambs' — the Christian flock / 'lamb of God' imagery that matches her nun framing and 'Holy Mother' title. The sweet-laden orphanage also feeds the Hansel-&-Gretel candy-house fairy-tale overlay running through Big Mom's origin.

An orphanage on Elbaf founded by Mother Carmel that takes in castoff children “regardless of their status or race” — problem children, the impoverished and near-enslaved, even a deposed prince, of many races (humans, a Fish-Man child, a Longarm-Tribe child, and giants) (pp. 5-9). The childhood home of Charlotte Linlin, where — among people her own size for the first time — she finds comfort and Carmel’s understanding. The two giant warrior-heroes Jorul and Jarul call on its children with semla before the winter-solstice fast. The seed of Big Mom’s own all-races-as-family dream (see Big Mom’s Dream).
