Chapter 492: Iron Mask Duval

Summary

Aboard their ship, the Straw Hats and their mermaid passenger Camie note that the attacking flying fish suddenly retreated after receiving a communication. At the Flying Fish Riders’ hideout — a town built out at sea east of the Sabaody Archipelago — the iron-masked boss Duval berates his men for not capturing the pirates, then reveals (as his country accent slips out) that a man aboard the Straw Hats’ ship “ruined mah whole life” and that he intends to kill him personally. His hired fish-man mercenaries, the Macro Gang (boss Macro, Gyaro, Tansui), have the captive Hatchan caged and plan to seize Camie and the pirates and sell them “in the human shop.” When the Straw Hats arrive, Hatchan begs Camie to flee, but a stray question from Luffy — “How’s Arlong doing?” — exposes the truth: Hatchan is Hachi, the former first mate of the Arlong Pirates. Luffy and Nami refuse to rescue an old enemy and order the ship turned around, until Camie is recaptured trying to save him; Nami relents (“Hachi is all right… we promised Camie”), and Luffy stretches underwater to snatch back Camie, Pappag and Hatchan’s cage. As the Flying Fish Riders surround them underwater, the crew squares up for a fight.
