Profile

The merfolk — mermaids and mermen — are the fish-tailed humanoid people of Fish-Man Island, one of the two peoples of the Ryugu Kingdom (the other being the Fish-Men proper). Name-only at first (Sanji’s “beautiful mermaids” line, Ch. 69); the first merfolk shown in the main story is the kissing-gourami mermaid Camie (Ch. 490). The Fish-Man Island saga is the first sustained on-page depiction of merfolk as a resident people: mermaid citizens, a fortune-teller, a princess, a king, princes, and court ministers.

Defining traits

• Ch. 424 / SBS Vol-51 — a mermaid’s tailfin splits into two legs around age 30, after which she can live on land (lore via Kokoro). Recorded under Fish-Men; cross-linked here.
• Ch. 495 p. 7-8 — mermaids are the fastest swimmers in all the seas (ranked above fish-men, themselves above flying fish).
• Ch. 500 / Ch. 529 — historically classed and enslaved as “fish” alongside fish-men (200-year persecution history; pre-Whitebeard mass enslavement on Fish-Man Island).
• Ch. 609 p. 12 — merman, mermaid, fish-man and human share identical, mutually transfusable blood; a fish-man/merfolk couple can have children of any of the types — the discrimination is cultural/legal, not biological.
• Ch. 612 p. 14, 18 — the royal line includes giant merfolk: Princess Shirahoshi is a giant smelt-whiting mermaid; King Neptune is a giant merman.
• Ch. 612 p. 15 — mermen come in species varieties (the catfish-merman Minister of the Left and seahorse-merman Minister of the Right).
• Ch. 626 pp. 9-11 — merfolk communication limits: merfolk “take talking to the fishes for granted” but none can speak to the Neptunians (Sea Kings); a mermaid able to is born once every few centuries (Shirahoshi), while even King Neptune can speak only with whales. Oden-era flashback (Ch. 967) — the mermaid fortune-teller as a 3-year-old prophet

• The mermaid fortune-teller Sharley (VIZ also “Shyarly”) appears as a 3-year-old prophet at Fish-Man Island (p. 8), foretelling the Mermaid Princess (Poseidon) birth ~24 years ago — establishing her prophetic gift as lifelong. Whole Cake Island (Ch. 830) — a hammerhead-shark half-mermaid in the Charlotte Family

• Charlotte Praline, a hammerhead-shark half-mermaid and Big Mom’s 29th daughter, appears (title card p. 6) — a mermaid/fish-man hybrid married to the brotula merman Aladdin of the Sun Pirates. First WCI-arc merfolk member.

Fish-Man Island Arc (flashback, Ch. 626) — the Neptunian-speaking mermaid; the queen’s assassination

• The chapter makes merfolk biology load-bearing lore: merfolk speak to fish but none can speak to the Neptunians; a mermaid able to is born once every few centuries (Princess Shirahoshi), while King Neptune alone can speak with whales (pp. 9-11). See Ancient Weapons, Sea Kings.
• Queen Otohime (mermaid) is assassinated at Conchcorde Plaza — shot by a hidden sniper after her signature box is burned (pp. 12-14) — ending her years-long campaign to win Fish-Men the right to emigrate to the surface and live alongside humans. Her dying wish: “Soon… we’ll look upon the real sun!” (p. 19).

Fish-Man Island Arc (flashback, Ch. 624) — mermaid royalty: the queen’s failing campaign

• The chapter shows merfolk royalty as a distinct on-page population from the Fish-Men proper: Queen Otohime (goldfish mermaid) and her daughter Princess Shirahoshi (shown here as a 4-year-old). Otohime’s five-year emigration petition collapses (only ~1,000 signatures from a five-million population) and she drunkenly broadcasts a kingdom-wide plea (pp. 6-11). The chapter closes on a Celestial Dragon’s wrecked ship arriving at the kingdom’s gate (p. 17).

Fish-Man Island Arc (flashback, Ch. 621) — the Ryugu royal family, 16 years ago

• The “Fish-Man Island, 16 years ago” flashback shows the merfolk royal family: Queen Otohime (goldfish mermaid) — alive, campaigning to move the kingdom to the surface for human–fish-man coexistence — and the infant princess Shirahoshi (p. 10), daughter of Otohime and the giant merman King Neptune.

Fish-Man Island Arc (Ch. 619) — the Sea Forest: a merman shipwright, a king’s last stand, a mermaid at her mother’s tomb

• Den (Bering Wolffish merman) coats the Thousand Sunny at the Forest of the Sea (p. 13).
• King Neptune (giant merman) makes a last stand against the New Fish-Man Pirates with Merman Combat: Ultra-Marine (p. 4), but his aged body fails (“I can’t defeat old age!”, p. 6) and he is captured (p. 16).
• Shirahoshi (giant mermaid) visits the tomb of her late mother, the mermaid queen Otohime, at the Sea Forest for the first time in years (p. 15).

Fish-Man Island Arc (Ch. 617) — the giant Mermaid Princess exposed at Coral Hill

• Princess Shirahoshi — a giant mermaid hidden inside Megalo’s mouth — is involuntarily regurgitated and publicly exposed at Coral Hill (pp. 16-17), confirmed to the crowd as “a giant mermaid and Neptune’s daughter.”

Fish-Man Island Arc (Ch. 616) — Den, a Bering Wolffish merman; heredity distinct from fish-men

• Den (the late Tom’s brother, a Bering Wolffish merman) is introduced at the Forest of the Sea (p. 12). The chapter again distinguishes mermen from fish-men (“Fish-men and mermen have their own genes. It’s a bit different with us”) while sharing the same atavism rule — a child can resemble a distant ancestor. Den is added as a race: merman member. Fish-Man Island Arc (Ch. 615) — the late queen named

• Otohime, the late mermaid queen of the Ryugu Kingdom, is named (not shown) via her grave in the Forest of the Sea — assassinated in broad daylight ten years ago (p. 17). Added to the people-roster as a deceased mermaid member (race: mermaid).

• The mermaid princess Shirahoshi is met in person by Luffy and names herself on-page (“My name is Shirahoshi! … I am the daughter of King Neptune!”, p. 10) — the first sustained on-page beat with a giant mermaid royal.
• Hody Jones explicitly distinguishes “fish-men and mermen” (p. 17) as he vows to crush King Neptune’s army — the clearest on-page articulation of the two-peoples distinction that grounds this §Races split.
