Energy Steroids Shorten The New Fish-Man Pirates Lifespan
Status: confirmed · Technique: chekhov-explicit, prop-tell
The seed
The New Fish-Man Pirates state outright that Energy Steroids trade the user’s lifespan for doubled-then-redoubled strength — “the price of that increased power is the shortening of our lives!” — and Hody Jones is shown gulping a dangerous fistful, his crew warning “You’re taking too many at once again!” (p. 6).
Ch. 617 page 6 — “he hasn’t taken it yet… he’s still clean”
Hody’s un-drugged baseline already exceeds Arlong’s (“way stronger than Arlong!!” ), underscoring that the Energy Steroids’ lifespan cost is paid for power he doesn’t even need — sharpening the planted self-destructive over-reliance.
The cost stated as lore back in Ch. 611 first becomes visible : the crew calls it “strength at the cost of a shortened life” (p. 17), and Hody ’s overdosed body is “being torn to pieces” (pp. 18-19) — the first on-page physical toll. Partial — the full toll on the officer corps lands later in the arc, so the seed stays pending.
The cost continues to show on the body: Hody ’s overdose has bleached his hair white and swollen his frame, and his crew recall he was “rolling on the ground in pain” from taking too many. The visible toll mounts toward the planted self-destructive collapse — Hody calls the transformed state “Perfect.” (Seed remains pending; the life-shortening payoff is forward.)
The body-cost is restated as the drug spreads to rank-and-file fighters: Wadatsumi (“his body is REALLY susceptible to pills!!”, p. 12) and Hyouzou (p. 18) are both dosed into monstrous, unstable states. Page 18 explicitly labels the steroid transformation an “awakening,” reinforcing that the power is a self-destroying chemical high rather than a sustainable ability.
Ch. 644 p. 3 — the cost begins to manifest
Mid-battle, “Sir Hody looks even more fearful than before!” — Hody is visibly aging/decaying from his Energy-Steroid abuse, the on-page onset of the lifespan cost backfiring exactly as seeded. (Evidence only — do NOT set payoff_chapter; reserve the flip for the full manifestation.)
Ch. 645 p. 9 — Luffy reads the steroid toll on Hody
Luffy tells Hody “I know they must be taking a toll on you!!” as Hody’s Fish-Man Jiujitsu fails against the Haki Gear Third — an on-page acknowledgement that the energy steroids are harming their user.
The payoff
Ch. 650 pp. 14-16 — the lifespan cost backfires on-page
Hody Jones and his executives have aged into wheezing, wrinkled old men in the palace prison tower — the explicit life-shortening price of the Energy Steroids (@0611/@0617) realized as accelerated aging. Compounded by the @0650 reveal that the steroids are the Tamate Box pills “said to age the imbiber.” The prior @0630/@0644/@0648 tells were partial; the full manifestation lands here. (status pending→confirmed; payoff_chapter 0650.)
(Historical note — written while the full payoff was still forward: “Pending — payoff is forward of this batch’s window.” Now superseded by the confirmed payoff above @0650.)

Why this matters
A power that explicitly costs the user their life is a classic Oda Chekhov’s cost — the prop-tell flags the drug as the New Fish-Man Pirates’ eventual physical undoing.
