Chapter 521: Hoof of the Celestial Dragon

Summary

In the Amazon Lily coliseum, Boa Hancock declines to fight Luffy and forces a choice: she will either restore the warriors she petrified or ferry Luffy off the island by ship — not both. Luffy instantly chooses to free the petrified warriors and bows in thanks without a second’s hesitation, stunning the Kuja that a man of such Haki would humble himself for others. The grateful warriors — Marguerite, Aphelandra, Sweetpea — are revived, and Luffy is invited to Kuja Castle. In the Empress’s throne room Hancock bares her back to show Luffy the mark he had recognized: the Hoof of the Celestial Dragon, the brand of the World Nobles’ slaves. Hancock confesses that she and her two sisters, Sandersonia and Marigold, were abducted at age twelve and enslaved at Mariejois, fed Devil Fruits for their masters’ amusement, until the fish-man adventurer Fisher Tiger scaled the Red Line with his bare hands, raided Mariejois, and freed every slave — then founded the Pirates of the Sun, whose members disguised the slave brand by overwriting it with a sun. Moved that Luffy “challenged the heavens with no regard for his own life” just as Tiger did, Hancock — heart thawing after years frozen — offers to lend him her ship.

New reveals

• The chapter’s titular mark, the “Hoof of the Celestial Dragon,” is the permanent brand burned onto every person kept as a slave by the World Nobles as “a reminder that they are less than human” (pp. 12-13). It is what Luffy half-recognized on Hancock’s back.
• Hancock and her two sisters were slaves of the Celestial Dragons. Abducted at age 12 from a Kuja pirate ship, sold into servitude, and held at Marijoa; their captors fed them Devil Fruits — the Love-Love Fruit (Hancock) and the Snake-Snake Fruit (Sandersonia & Marigold) — “to amuse themselves” (pp. 14, 17). Hancock’s two sisters are now named on-page as Sonia and Mari.
• Hancock’s Devil Fruit is named for the first time: the Love-Love Fruit (Mero Mero no Mi); her sisters’ is the Snake-Snake Fruit (Hebi Hebi no Mi) (p. 17).

It had always been accepted as fact that no one could stand against the Celestial Dragons.
• Fisher Tiger founded the Pirates of the Sun from the freed fugitives; the former slaves overwrote the Celestial Dragon brand with a sun mark to erase the trace of their bondage (pp. 16-17). Hachi’s forehead sun is this same disguised brand. Tiger is “long dead,” and the Fish-Man pirates later “split into several factions.”
• Grandma Nyon found the three sisters as “miserable, wandering wretches” after they escaped the Celestial Dragons and brought them home to Amazon Lily; she is a “traitor to this nation” (exiled) who once went to the outer seas (p. 19).
