Chapter 866: Natural Born Destroyer

A full-chapter flashback to Big Mom’s origin. Aged five, the already-enormous human girl Charlotte Linlin is abandoned by her birth family on the giants’ homeland Elbaf — they call it an “exile,” fleeing the “damage she caused” and entrusting her to the island’s “Holy Mother.” That woman is Mother Carmel (formerly Sister Carmel), a wandering holy figure who decades earlier halted the Navy’s execution of the surviving Giant Pirates and founded the orphanage House of Lambs, which takes in castoff children “regardless of status or race.” Among giants for the first time, Linlin finds comfort and Carmel’s understanding — but the orphanage learns to fear her: she one-shot-kills a bear, breaks bones with a smack, and nearly mutilates her Fish-Man and Longarm-Tribe playmates out of ignorance, while Carmel forgives everything. The chapter steeps in Elbaf custom (the giants’ 40-year duels; the warrior heroes Beardfall Jorul and Beardhill Jarul; the sweet treat semla; the recent birth of Prince Loki) before the 12-day winter-solstice fast. On day seven, starved and craving semla, Linlin’s mind snaps into her first uncontrollable craving rampage — she razes the village of Elbaf. Chief Jorul, declaring her “a god of disaster,” moves to put her down.
