Prince Fukaboshi · alive · first son & crown prince of the Ryugu Kingdom · Neptune family · first appeared @0609

Profile

Fukaboshi — first son and crown prince of the Ryugu Kingdom royal family (the “Neptune brothers”); a shark merman. Eldest of the “three greats of the Neptune Army” (Ch. 609 p. 8). Level-headed and authoritative — leads the royal Neptune-Army patrol at the inlet, sees through the mermaid girls’ cover (“I don’t believe you girls,” p. 18), and reveals the princes’ true errand: not to arrest the Straw Hats but to deliver a message from Jimbei — a chance they now believe they have missed (pp. 18–19).

Etymology

Confidence: high · フカボシ = fuka (‘shark’) + -boshi/hoshi (‘star’) = literally “shark-star,” matching his on-page species, a shark merman. All four Neptune royal children carry the -hoshi/-boshi (‘star’) suffix prefixed by their fish species — Shirahoshi (“white star”), Fukaboshi (shark), Ryuboshi (oarfish), Manboshi (sunfish). The star-naming convention plus the Ryugu (“Dragon Palace”) setting and Queen Otohime’s name knit the family into the Urashima Tarō / Ryūjin sea-god folklore. Source: One Piece Wiki — Fukaboshi.

  • Delivers the arc’s thesis: their mother Otohime was “murdered by the hatred of Fish-Man Island” itself, and the royal family “should have started by fighting inward” (p. 13). Quotes Otohime’s creed — “Hatred is an illusion that the living create and amplify on their own.”

  • Leads his brothers Ryuboshi and Manboshi to defend King Neptune at Conchcorde Plaza (pp. 13-14).
  • Confronts Hody: the fish-men will “forget centuries of discrimination” and “forgive the humans for murdering our hero and queen” to “build a future of peace with the humans”; Hody is “weaker than anyone on this island” (pp. 14-18). The princes’ “nothing happened” song-and-dance at the moment of her death (p. 18) is the first on-page instance of averting that trigger. See Shirahoshis Power Triggered By Trauma Neptunian Rampage.

Notes

  • Etymology resolved — see frontmatter etymology and the Etymology section. The “-boshi” princes (Fukaboshi / Ryuboshi / Manboshi) and their species (shark / oarfish / sunfish) all share the Neptune-line 星 -boshi (‘star’) suffix.
  • Member of Merfolk (the §Races split actioned Ch. 612; race: merman); also cross-linked from Fish-Men during the transition.
