Mokomo Dukedom

Etymology

Mokomo Dukedom (モコモ公国, Mokomo Kōkoku) — 公国 (kōkoku) = “dukedom / principality”; “Mokomo” is a pun on もこもこ (mokomoko), the Japanese mimetic for “fluffy / fuzzy / thick-furred,” referring to the fur-covered citizens of the Mink Tribe who live here. A descriptive species-toponym matching the furred-animal-people theme (cf. the tribe name “Mink” = a prized-fur mustelid).

• Ch. 805 — first mentioned & first shown. Named as the centuries-old mink nation razed by Jack ~half a month ago; Wanda recounts its history and names the destroyer. See Devastation of Zou Ghost-Town Found.
• Ch. 807 — established as ruled by two kings: the King of the Day, Duke Dogstorm, and the King of the Night, the Cat Viper (p. 15). • Ch. 808 — the razing dramatized. In Wanda’s flashback the dukedom is destroyed by Kaido’s Animal Kingdom Pirates under Jack the Drought, using one of Caesar Clown’s gas weapons (pp. 4, 17), in their hunt for the Wano ninja Raizo. Shown ruled by the King of the Day, Duke Dogstorm, from his sanatorium; guarded by the lion-mink Musketeer captain Shishilian. See Destruction of Zou.
• Ch. 809 — the nation endures. The flashback continues: both kings refuse Jack — Duke Dogstorm (King of the Day) drops his sword and pleads the samurai “is not in this land,” while the Cat Viper (King of the Night) vows he “wouldn’t let a samurai take a single step [off] this island” — and the minks let their homeland be razed rather than give the man up (pp. 10–19). • Ch. 812 — the ancestral fortress named. The dukedom is a layout of fortresses; its Right-Flank Fortress is “a living space once used by our ancestors long ago” (p. 3). The recovering minks treat the Straw Hats as saviors; Pekoms, a Zou-born mink, weeps to find his homeland in ruins (pp. 3-9).
• Ch. 815 — the samurai turned away at the gate. The combined crews keep night watch to keep the visiting samurai Kin’emon and Kanjuro OUT of the Dukedom (the minks bear a grudge against samurai after Jack razed the thousand-year-old city seeking the warrior Raizo); they conclude “the Raizo they seek is not here.” At dawn a monkey-mink sentry spots the samurai and flees to raise the alarm (pp. 15–17). • Ch. 816 — the Dog-vs-Cat clash; the Mink–Kozuki brotherhood revealed. The dukedom’s two rival lords — Dogstorm (“King of Dogs”) and the Cat Viper (the “monster cat”) — collide in Kurau City, each now missing a limb, demanding the visiting samurai surrender Raizo. The dukes reveal Raizo is alive and that the minks endured the city’s ruin rather than betray their thousand-year bond with Wano’s Kozuki Clan (p. 2–17). • Ch. 1056 — referenced (New Era): the next generation inherits Zou. Dukes Dogstorm and Cat Viper leave the Dukedom / Zou to the young generation and relocate to Wano to serve Momonosuke as Kozuki samurai; Carrot is named its new ruler (“she’s been out to see the world, thanks ta Luffy”), with Wanda assisting (pp. 4–5).

Oden-era flashback

The dukedom under Duke Genghis Baan (Ch. 967)

• ~24 years ago the Dukedom was led by Duke Duke of the Mokomo Dukedom, who welcomed the Roger Pirates after a letter from Dogstorm (Inuarashi) and Cat Viper (Nekomamushi) — then “incorrigible problem children” abroad (p. 14). The dukedom later passes to Inuarashi & Nekomamushi. See Minks, Zou.
