New World (Marines) · “Grand Line Naval Base 5” · first named: Ch. 594

Profile

G-5 (Grand Line Naval Base 5) is a Marine unit operating in the New World, near the Red Line. The name is first spoken on-page when Captain (later Vice-Admiral) Smoker requests a transfer here after the war — “I like to keep my enemies close” (Ch. 594). Captured pirates describe it as “a lawless unit of crazed sailors that ignore all orders from HQ” who “make campfires outta pirates” and torture captives — a brutal, off-the-books Marine outfit. Commanded by Vice-Admiral Smoker with Captain Tashigi as base CO; they intercept pirates rising from Fish-Man Island. (Models on the sibling G-2 Marine branch-base; the base building proper is not shown through 0667.)

Etymology

“G” = Grand Line; “5” = the fifth numbered Marine branch base. The G-bases are the Marines’ numbered Grand Line garrison network (cf. the sibling G-2). A structural naming convention rather than wordplay. Confidence: high.

Key chapters

  • Ch. 594 — first named (Smoker’s post-war transfer request).
  • Ch. 652 — full-naming caption “Grand Line Naval Base 5 — G-5 Captain Tashigi”; Smoker (now Vice-Admiral) and Tashigi (now Captain) shown commanding the G-5 unit near the Red Line, interrogating pirates risen from Fish-Man Island.
  • Ch. 655 — first full unit/warship appearance ; Vice-Admiral Smoker wiretaps the Straw Hats with a black transponder snail and sets the G-5 warship course into off-limits Punk Hazard in pursuit, reining in his pirate-bullying sailors (pp. 7-9).
  • Ch. 660 — G-5 marines, with Vice-Admiral Smoker and Captain Tashigi (“his cutie of a companion”), reach the lab on Punk Hazard and confront its resident Warlord Trafalgar Law at the front entrance; Law refuses their inspection and traps them on the island.
  • Ch. 673 — G-5’s structure and rot exposed: Vice Admiral Vergo is the base commander (and secretly the broker Joker’s mole); Commodore Yarisugi commands Unit 06 and abuses the parents of children Caesar abducted (the deaths laundered as a “sailing accident”); Tashigi is Smoker’s right hand in Unit 01.
  • Ch. 679 — (“The G-5 Spirit”) the unit abandons its fight with the Straw Hats to flee Caesar’s gas, carrying their wounded and bodily evacuating Captain Tashigi (over her protests — “Your fellow sailors are trapped back there!!”) through the closing gate; many sailors are trapped behind and lost — the chapter’s titular “G-5 spirit” (the brutal unit’s loyalty and grief).
