The Den Den Mushi (Transponder/Telephone Snail) is the Grand Line’s living-snail
telephone technology — first shown on-page in Ch. 126 (pp. 18-19) at Mr. 3’s
abandoned Wax-Wax Mansion. A snail with a rotary-phone receiver mounted on its shell;
calls connect by snail-to-snail signal.
Ch. 126 pp. 18-19: First on-page Den Den Mushi in the series. A snail with a rotary-phone receiver mounted on its shell rings at Mr. 3’s Wax-Wax Mansion tea-table (RINGGG… RINGGG…); Sanji answers it (“Hey, a telephone snail!!”).
Ch. 126 p. 19: The snail mirrors the facial expression of the person on the other end of the line — it scowls as Crocodile speaks. First on-page demonstration of the expression-mirroring mechanic — the tell that lets characters (and readers) read the caller’s mood.
Ch. 126: Used as Baroque Works’ agent-coordination channel — Crocodile (Mr. Zero) phones his Officer Agents to receive mission reports. The Den Den Mushi is the device that delivers the volume-15 Mr. Zero cliffhanger.
Ch. 127 p. 1, pp. 8-17: First chapter to foreground the Den Den Mushi as a load-bearing plot-prop — Ch. 0127 is titled Snail-o-phone and is structured around Mr. 3’s Snail-o-phone. Establishes its mechanics in detail: long-range two-way voice communication; portable (Mr. 3 carries one in his camp); the snail’s face mirrors the facial expression / mood of the speaker on the other end (p. 12 — the snail takes on the Unluckies’ otter-mask and vulture-mask features when their snails connect; p. 16 — conveys Crocodile’s suspicion).
Ch. 127 pp. 9-17: The device does not visually convey the speaker’s identity — the snail conceals who is actually speaking, a deception affordance Sanji immediately exploits to impersonate Mr. 3. First on-page use of the Den Den Mushi as an intercepted-communication / impersonation channel.
Ch. 127 p. 17: Snail-o-phone communication is Navy-interceptable — Crocodile orders a comms-blackout (“we can’t have the navy catching on to us”), switching Baroque Works to in-person orders. First on-page canonization of long-range comms as a security risk.

Transponder Snail (regular) — big, inconvenient to carry, strong signal, communicates with distant islands, fax-capable via attachment.
Black Transponder Snail — stays small at maturity, used as listening device — “They like to eavesdrop and do not like to communicate with their fellow Snails.”
Snail biology — “They’re living things, like bugs.” / “Transponder Snails do not mind captivity by humans because they get fed.”
Ch. 128 p. 4: First on-page Black Transponder Snail — the wiretap/listening-device variant. Smoker’s Marine ship runs a black-shelled Den Den Mushi captioned BLACK TRANSPONDER SNAIL (LISTENING DEVICE) — a wiretap-variant that intercepts other snails’ transmissions without the broadcasting parties knowing; the intercepted call plays back garbled (KRRK / ZZK) and only four keywords are recoverable. Pays off the Ch. 0127 comms-are-Navy-interceptable security-risk install by showing the interception instrument itself. The standard Transponder Snail handles call-and-receive; the Black variant adds the surveillance/eavesdropping sub-axis. Forward-canon: the Black Den Den Mushi becomes the series’ canonical wiretap-instrument (Buster Call interception, CP-tier surveillance, Marine signals intelligence). Ch. 510: Two snail variants named on-page (p. 8) — a “miniature transponder snail” and an arm-worn “black transponder snail” wiretap model (Sentomaru to Kizaru: “The black transponder snail on your arm is for wiretaps!”). Reuses the Black-snail eavesdropping species canonized Ch. 128 / SBS-taxonomized Ch. 173.

Chronology / structure
The technology has sub-types — White, Black, Golden/Surveillance, Baby, and Visual
Den Den Mushi — with differing range, eavesdrop, and broadcast properties. The
Black Transponder Snail sub-type is now on-page as of Ch. 128 (the
wiretap/listening-device variant — see What we know above); the remaining sub-types
are still forward-canon. The Den Den Mushi becomes a load-bearing plot-device for
every later arc (Marine Buster Calls, inter-crew coordination). Treated here as
newly-established canonically-real Grand Line infrastructure.
