Kurau City

Etymology

クラウ都 (Kurau-to). The suffix 都 (to / miyako) means “capital / metropolis / great city,” so VIZ’s “Kurau City” is literally “Kurau Capital” — the principal city of the Mink Tribe’s Mokomo Dukedom, built for hundreds of thousands on the mid-back of the elephant Zou. The 都-suffix surface is solid (sourced kana). No Oda/SBS source documents a meaning for the stem クラウ (kurau); it is, however, an exact homophone of the verb 食らう (kurau, “to devour / gobble down,” a rough register) — thematically apt for the Warrior-Beast/Battlebeast minks (戦獣民族, Senjū-minzoku) — but this pun is an unconfirmed observation, not canon (confidence: speculative). Sibling toponym: Mokomo (もこもこ mokomoko, “fluffy”) for the dukedom’s furred citizens.

• Ch. 805 — first mentioned & first shown. Robin’s group (with Law, Zoro, Usopp) investigates the ruined city: built for “hundreds of thousands,” emptied without a trace, claw-marks and giant footprints, collapsed “a week or two ago.” See Devastation of Zou Ghost-Town Found.
• Ch. 806 — the rain-ruption flood. Zoro, Law and Robin ride out the twice-daily seawater flood here among sharks washed in with the water — the city is “built to handle this precise water level” (p. 6). Law deduces the flood is “an ordinary occurrence.”
• Ch. 808 — the assault, in flashback. “Peaceful Kurau City turned into a battlefield” when Kaido’s Animal Kingdom Pirates — led by Jack the Drought — breached the gates hunting the Wano ninja Raizo (Wanda’s narration, pp. 2, 10). See Destruction of Zou.

• Ch. 816 — the Dog-vs-Cat clash. The two mink rulers, Dogstorm and the Cat Viper, collide here over the hunt for Raizo (p. 6–17); Kin’emon exposes himself to stop the duel and the dukes reveal Raizo is alive and well. See Destruction of Zou.
