Chapter 1152: A Horrible Day

Summary

Present-day Elbaf, under the Holy Knights’ assault: giants and Straw Hats rush the lift to reach the victims, while Luffy stays behind with the chained Prince Loki, the healing Chopper, Nami, and the gravely wounded old swordsman the giants call “Mr. Ya” — revealed to be Scopper Gaban of the Roger Pirates. Loki, who has Supreme King Haki, insists the Holy Knights “are not immortal” and can be stopped, and begs Hajrudin to undo his cuffs and take him to fight. Gaban notes that more than one Straw Hat carries Conqueror’s Haki and points out to a startled Zoro that it has been “flowing out of” him unconsciously. Luffy, delighted, tries to recruit Loki (“Join my crew, man!!”), but Loki spurns being anyone’s “henchman,” and the giants remind Luffy that Elbaf has condemned Loki to death for his crimes 14 years ago — 113 soldiers slain, Chief Jarul wounded, and his own father King Harald killed. Overruling the crowd, Gaban insists they unlock Loki’s chains, and Hajrudin — Loki’s half-brother (same father, different mothers) — demands Loki swear by God and explain, in three minutes, what really happened. The chapter drops into flashback: 14 years ago Loki returned violently to Aurust Castle and forced his way into the throne room, where a massacre unfolded around his silhouette and Harald fell. A parallel flashback shows a young Shanks bathing at Gaban’s house in The Sun World, reminiscing about the Roger crew’s Little Garden days and revealing he had met King Harald in Marijoa. The final beats reframe Elbaf’s beloved dead king: 109 years ago the giants were the most feared force on the sea, and Harald — captioned “King of War-Land Elbaph Island” — was a rampaging “lowlife scumbag” who leveled villages laughing “Who’s your god now?!!”

New reveals

• “Mr. Ya” = Scopper Gaban. The gravely injured old swordsman the giants tend is the Roger Pirates’ Scopper Gaban, living on Elbaf in The Sun World at “Gaban’s House” with the giantess Ripley (pp. 8, 13–14).
• Gaban + Shanks were at Elbaf 14 years ago. They “headed for Aurust Castle together” the day of the massacre; they didn’t see the whole thing but “felt an extreme, abnormal Haki from the castle” (p. 8).
• Shanks knew King Harald. Shanks “met him in Marijoa… we got along all right,” and wanted to meet Harald at home to “discuss something we couldn’t talk about in the Holy Land” (pp. 14–15).
• Shanks’s abandoned plan. After “Captain [Roger] died ten years ago,” Shanks intended to “join up with Buggy and lead a laid-back pirating life… but even here in Elbaf, there’s so much more to learn… my life’s changed entirely.” Gaban: “You’re a child of fate, Shanks.” (pp. 13–14.)
• Zoro has Conqueror’s Haki. Gaban tells the swordsman it’s been “flowing out of” him unconsciously; Zoro didn’t know he could use “Supreme King Haki.” Sanji comically assumes he’s the one being praised. (p. 4.)
• Loki has Supreme King Haki (“Elbaph already has me”), calls the Holy Knights “not immortal,” and asks to be freed to fight. Hajrudin refuses, distrusting him. (pp. 3–5.)
