Chapter 1096: Kumachi

Summary

The Kuma flashback opens on the God Valley Incident (38 years before the present). On the West Blue island of God Valley, the World Nobles stage a “murder game” — a human hunt of the island’s ~100,000 enslaved natives (mockingly called “rabbits”), engineered to drive them off so the Government can seize the island’s resources before it is erased from history (pp. 2–5). The lead hunter, the Celestial Dragon Garling, racks up 100,000 points for his family. Among the doomed slaves are a young Kuma — “the Buccaneer boy” — a fish-man, Ivankov (Iva), and Ginny; they plot to use the event’s two prizes (the Paw-Paw Fruit and a Mythical-Zoan azure-dragon fruit) to break the Navy blockade. The hunt collapses into chaos when the Rocks Pirates (Rocks, young Newgate, Linlin, Stussy, Gloriosa) make landfall to seize the same treasure, the Roger Pirates arrive a year into their rivalry, and Vice Admiral Garp lands as the slaves’ would-be rescuer (pp. 8–12). In the bedlam, the slaves push a fruit on Kuma — “Eat it, Kuma! Don’t think!” — and a Celestial Dragon tells the Buccaneer boy his only options are “slavery and death,” to which the child vows that if he gains power he wants “to be like Nika” and free everyone (pp. 12–13). The chapter cuts to the aftermath in the Sorbet Kingdom, South Blue: only Garp’s heroics make the news, Kuma survived with “Hands of Liberation” having saved 500+ lives, and he settles with Ginny — who is four years older and resolves to “feed little Kumachi” — in the church Kuma’s family once ran (pp. 14–17).

• Kuma is a Buccaneer — a distinct “special people” the World Government is wiping out; a World Noble calls him “the Buccaneer boy” and declares “your people will vanish for good” (p. 13). Pays off the Kuma From A Special People seed.
• The God Valley Incident is shown directly: a World-Noble human-hunting game over an island of ~100,000 enslaved “rabbits,” scored for points, with “one-hit-kill” excellence bonuses — staged to clear the natives so the Government can take the island’s resources, then erase the event from history (pp. 2–5).
• God Valley is in West Blue (p. 4 caption). The Rocks Pirates’ base, Fullalead, is a New World pirate island (p. 4 caption).
