Chapter 1140: Scopper Gaban

Summary

At Aurust Castle, Luffy brawls with a giant-scaled old warrior the Elbaf giants call “Sir Ya,” who guards one of the keys to Prince Loki’s chains and forces Luffy to take it by force (“just take it from me… so I can go back to the feast”). The old man reveals dual battle-axes (“Yaso-Takeru”), levels a tower of the castle, and toys with Luffy — grabbing at his straw hat and remarking it “would look better on you than that helmet.” Luffy insists the hat is “the treasure I’m holding for Shanks,” and the old man’s knowledge of the hat and of Shanks marks him as no ordinary giant: the chapter is titled for him — Scopper Gaban of the Roger Pirates, alive on Elbaf. A brief flashback (a young Shanks, a laughing captain-figure: “do as you will with him, Gaban”) ties Gaban and Shanks together as Roger’s crewmates. Gaban finally yields, lets Luffy keep the key that was already in his possession, dons his straw hat, and leaves with an ominous invitation: come see me again “if Elbaf is still intact by the time you’re leaving this island.” Meanwhile, the Holy Knights escalate: over an Elbaf school full of giant children (“served up to us on a platter… The Sun World”), Gunko “makes the call” and opens an Abyss Pentagram, summoning two more Holy Knights — the lounging St. Sommers (Shepherd Family) and the sleepy, bomb-headed St. Killingham (Rimoshifu Family). Commander Shamrock, who had come to visit “Harald’s grave,” is told the Holy Land has been dire “ever since the Reverie” and is ordered back. Their new task on Elbaf: kidnap the giant children and take them to the Holy Land — “with your powers, you can make it into a game.”

• “Sir Ya” is Scopper Gaban. The giant-scaled old warrior who guards the key at Aurust Castle is the legendary Roger Pirates fighter Scopper Gaban, alive and living among the Elbaf giants (chapter title; the giants call him “Sir Ya”; pp. 2–11). His name is spoken on-page in the flashback (“do as you will with him, Gaban,” p. 11).
• Gaban ↔ Shanks, Roger-crew tie. A flashback insert shows a young Shanks (“Wait, Shanks”; “What makes you think I’m going to trust this guy?”) and a laughing captain-figure (read as Roger) telling Gaban to “do as you will with him” — establishing Gaban and Shanks as fellow Roger Pirates (p. 11).
