Summary

The Thousand Sunny sinks deeper toward Fish-Man Island, its crew minus Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji (lost when they scattered in the downward current). The deep sea is a world of total darkness: a giant glowing jellyfish nearly snares them before it is eaten by a larger predator; eyeless and re-evolved-eye fish swarm; anglerfish hunt with luring lights. The crew realizes their captive pirate Caribou has vanished — he is hiding in a barrel, having melted out of his ropes (a mud-bodied Devil Fruit user), gloating that he will let the “navigators” steer the ship to Fish-Man Island and murder them all on arrival, before the volcanic heat cooks him in the barrel and he begs to be let out. The Sunny is nearly swallowed by a giant anglerfish, then by the colossal “sea spirit” Wadatsumi, servant of Vander Decken IX, whose cursed centuries-old ghost ship the Flying Dutchman looms out of the dark hunting sunken treasure. As Wadatsumi turns on the Sunny, a familiar tentacle arrives: Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji return alive astride the tamed Kraken Surume, “the monster of the North Pole,” which now drags the Sunny along the deep-sea route — straight toward a submarine volcano that is about to erupt.
