Firsts
  • OARS (Special Zombie Number 900) carries LUFFY'S stolen shadow, and therefore manifests Luffy's personality, dream and Devil-Fruit power: he demands to 'set sail and go around the world,' throws a 'GUM-GUM PISTOL,' and declares 'I WILL BECOME... THE PIRATE KING!!!' (pp. 4-8).
  • OARS breaks free of the special steel freezer that contained him; the zombies cry 'He's rotten dangerous! Oars escaped!' (pp. 6-7).
  • Zombies relay Moria's plan to the newly-revived Oars: he is Moria's 'underling' who will make Moria the 'King of the Oceans someday' (p. 5) — Moria himself is not shown and does not speak; a horned zombie general addresses Oars 'in the present day' (not a flashback).
  • Brook's lonely five-year war on Thriller Bark is recounted: terrified of the zombies, he discovered that SALT purifies them (a zombie that ate salted broiled fish was 'purified'), then hunted them nightly while humming, searching for his stolen shadow (pp. 8-11).
  • Brook confronts the swordsman zombie that carries his shadow and fights exactly like him; the zombie threatens to cut off Brook's afro, giving the chapter its title — Brook begs 'ANYTHING BUT MY AFRO!' The afro 'will never grow back' now that his shadow is gone, and Brook has trained for five years to reclaim it 'whenever the opportunity struck' (pp. 12-14).
  • Absalom orders Nami — captured and unconscious — dressed and taken to the wedding hall; the forced wedding ceremony is imminent (p. 15).
  • Robin, Franky and Chopper find Luffy, Zoro and Sanji tied to chairs in the dining room, asleep and unwakeable because their shadows were stolen; Robin rouses them with a single triple-bait lie — 'a beautiful female sword master carrying lots of meat' (pp. 16-19).

Summary

Thriller Bark’s inhabitants are gripped by fear: the “humming swordsman” (Brook) has learned the zombies’ weakness, and a monstrous roaring shakes the island. In the special steel freezer, the zombies force-feed the awakened Special Zombie Number 900 — Oars — who is now animated by Luffy’s stolen shadow and so behaves exactly like Luffy: he eats ravenously, demands to sail around the world, throws a “Gum-Gum Pistol,” and declares he will become the Pirate King before smashing free of his steel prison (“Oars escaped!”). In a flashback Brook recounts his solitary five-year war on the island — how he discovered that salt purifies the zombies, hunted them by night while humming, and at last found the swordsman zombie that carries his shadow and fights identically to him; when it tries to lop off his afro he wails “Anything but my afro!” Elsewhere, Absalom has the unconscious Nami dressed for a forced wedding. Hearing “Luffy’s zombie” wreaking havoc, Robin, Franky and Chopper climb to the bosses’ mansion, spot the Thousand Sunny, and find Luffy, Zoro and Sanji tied up and asleep in the dining room — Robin wakes the three shadowless captains with one perfectly aimed lie: “There’s a beautiful female sword master carrying lots of meat.”
