First on-page contemporary articulation of the Red-Line-as-continental-divider doctrine. Treated as common-knowledge by Grand-Line locals. Sets up the two-tier-world geography (East/North/South/West Blues vs Grand Line + New World) that later chapters use as the load-bearing structural anchor for every cross-world plot (Sabaody, Reverie, Mary Geoise, Imu).

What we know

• Ch. 496 — The Red Line is established as the gateway choke-point for the New World: only two routes exist — (1) over the Red Line through Mariejoa (WG permission required; ship abandoned and re-bought on the far side), or (2) the seafloor route under it through Fish-Man Island (ship kept, but must be coated). The Great Wall “circles the world”; Fish-Man Island sits at a tiny hole in it (p. 10-11).

Chronology / structure

The Red-Line-as-divider doctrine is the structural precondition for:

• Reverse Mountain — the only sub-Knock-Up-Stream entry-route between the Blues and the Grand Line.
• The Mary Geoise / Five Elders / Reverie / Imu plot-system (Ch. 906+): Mary Geoise sits atop the Red Line, separating the Celestial-Dragon world from the surface-world.
• Sabaody Archipelago / Fish-Man Island traversal: the only known under-Red-Line passage.

Open questions about this topic

• Imu Identity — how is the Red Line made (natural geology vs. ancient engineering)? Imu’s geographic centrality suggests the latter.
• Void Century and Ancient Kingdom — was the Red Line raised during/after the Void-Century war? The submerged-Ancient-Kingdom theory implies the Red-Line geography postdates the Void Century.
