  • YAMI YAMI NO MI POWERS DEBUT (pp. 2-14): Blackbeard's 'Dark-Dark Fruit' is named on-page as a LOGIA (p. 3) — 'said to be the most dangerous power in the history of all Devil Fruit powers.' Its mechanics are demonstrated in full for the first time: darkness = gravity that 'sucks in everything, even light' (p. 5), a 'Black Hole' that swallows the entire town into the ground and a 'Liberation' that spits the crushed debris back out (pp. 6-9).
  • YAMI YAMI DOUBLE-RULEBOOK (pp. 11-14): (1) Blackbeard's body ABSORBS all pain and the pain is AMPLIFIED — unlike other Logia he cannot turn to element and dodge, so Ace's fire actually burns him ('HOT! HOT! HOT!'); (2) by TOUCH, the darkness nullifies any Devil Fruit user's powers — 'while I'm touching their bodies, a Devil Fruit user loses their powers,' turning Logia/Zoan/Paramythia users 'back into ordinary, weak human beings' (p. 14). The gravity can also pull a DF user's actual body in (Black Vortex).
  • ACE'S FIRE ARSENAL: named techniques debut on-page — 'Firefly,' 'Fiery Doll,' 'St. Elmo's Fire,' 'Spears made of fire,' 'Cross Fire,' and 'Great Flame Commandment: Flame Emperor' (pp. 10-18).
  • ACE RESTATES HIS GOAL (p. 19): 'I will make Whitebeard the King of the Pirates.' Blackbeard frames the duel as 'The sun?! Or the darkness?! Only one of us will win!'
  • NARRATION FLAGS THE DUEL AS A WORLD-TRIGGER (p. 19): 'The duel at Banaro Island in the Grand Line... this battle between pirates... would later be identified as the trigger for the major events that were to follow.' Closing panel: Ace's twin-smiley-bead hat lying alone in the sand.
  • BANARO ISLAND named on-page (p. 19) as a Grand Line island; its landmark 'Banana Rock' collapses (p. 17).
  • FEATURE: this chapter carries the opening page of an 18-page 'Question Corner Special: Complete Diagram — The Thousand Sunny' (p. 20), Oda's full cutaway tour of the crew's new ship.

Summary

On Banaro Island in the Grand Line, Whitebeard’s Second Division Commander Ace finally corners his quarry — the crew-traitor he has hunted since Drum — Blackbeard (Marshall D. Teach), who reveals he has eaten the Logia-type Dark-Dark Fruit (Yami Yami no Mi), “said to be the most dangerous power in the history of all Devil Fruit powers.” Teach demonstrates its full grammar: a darkness so dense it acts as infinite gravity, swallowing the entire town into a “Black Hole” and then “Liberating” the crushed debris in a single blast. When Ace torches him with Firefly and Fiery Doll, Teach actually burns — and explains the fruit’s price: his body absorbs all pain and amplifies it, so unlike other Logia he can’t turn to element and dodge. In exchange, his darkness can absorb the one thing no other Devil Fruit can: by touching an opponent, he nullifies their powers entirely — Logia, Zoan, or Paramythia “all think they are invulnerable,” but his grip turns them “back into ordinary, weak human beings.” He drags Ace in with a Black Vortex and lands a real punch. Ace counters by keeping his distance — St. Elmo’s Fire, Cross Fire, Great Flame Commandment: Flame Emperor — and refuses Teach’s invitation to join him: “If I bowed down to power, what’s the point in living? I will make Whitebeard the King of the Pirates.” Teach frames it as sun versus darkness; the island erupts. The narration flags this duel as the future “trigger for the major events that were to follow,” closing on Ace’s hat lying alone in the sand. (Chapter 441 also carries the opening page of an 18-page “Complete Diagram — The Thousand Sunny” feature, p. 20.)
