Ship Coating

Structural lore — the Yarukiman-resin bubble coating that lets a ship dive past the Red Line. Canonical note for the Sabaody bubble/coating mechanic .

What we know

• Ch. 497 — The giant Yarukiman Mangrove trees of Sabaody Archipelago exude a resin that forms tough, air-tight soap bubbles, which only retain their force inside the archipelago’s adapted climate — the resin/bubbles lose their force the moment they leave Sabaody (pp. 6-9).
• Ch. 497 — Applications shown: people and cargo can be sealed inside bubbles (“bubble bags”); bubble bikes (“Bonchari,” 500 berries/day, 10,000 to buy) ride on them; round buildings/hotels are made by coating a giant bubble in metal (p. 11).
• Ch. 497 — Most importantly, a ship can be “coated” in resin so it can descend below the sea — the method needed to reach Fish-Man Island; the crew arranges this at the Grove 30 shopping mall (pp. 11-12). Coating is named, not yet performed this chapter.
• Ch. 498 — Restated as the established special method to reach Fish-Man Island: the ship must be coated by a coating specialist so it can travel the deep sea below the Red Line (p. 9). The specialist the crew needs — the ex-pirate Rayleigh — is named but absent (gone six months; pp. 5, 9). Coating still named, not yet performed.
• Ch. 504 p. 2: With Luffy’s incident forcing an early departure, rookie crews flee for Fish-Man Island now that their ship-coating is finished (“How’s the coating on the ship?!” / “It was finished yesterday!”). Reinforces that a finished coating is the prerequisite to descend below the Red Line.
• Ch. 551 — First offensive/tactical use of ship coating: Whitebeard’s main fleet coats its ships and travels submerged, then surfaces inside Marineford bay for a surprise assault (“They sealed their ships… and went underwater!!”, pp. 15-17) aboard the Moby Dick. Pays off the Sabaody coating mechanic (Ch. 497) as a battlefield maneuver. Cross-link Whitebeard Pirates, Moby Dick.
• Ch. 602 — Buoyancy & propulsion mechanics. A coated ship has very little buoyancy and is held afloat by an inflatable buoyancy pouch / airbag under the keel — release it to dive. Underwater the coated ship is propelled by ocean currents, not wind, so the crew mans the sails to steer the descent (pp. 11, 14-15; Nami / Robin explaining). Demonstrated by the Thousand Sunny leaving Sabaody for Fish-Man Island.
• Ch. 566 — Reserve coated ships stay submerged and re-emerge mid-battle. Whitebeard reveals he kept additional coated ships hidden underwater inside the bay, surfacing one mid-battle (“Another coated ship has appeared!! It was hiding in the water all along!!” / Whitebeard: “I never said I’d brought out all my ships”, pp. 10-11) — demonstrating coated ships can lie hidden underwater and re-surface as a tactical maneuver, extending the Ch. 551 submerged-assault use. The surfaced paddle-ship is then hauled ashore by Little Oars Jr. to break the encirclement wall. Cross-link Whitebeard Pirates.

• Ch. 603 — Coating durability & failure modes. From Rayleigh’s notes (pp. 11-12): the bubble coating stretches to a point and lets bullets/cannonballs pass through it (like Sabaody’s bubbles), and self-heals — BUT it will pop from multiple simultaneous punctures, a mast/hull breach, a sea-beast’s fangs (a “Neptunian”), or a reef collision. “Be careful. Seventy percent of all ships sink on their way to Fish-Man Island.” Demonstrated on the diving Thousand Sunny.

• Ch. 614 — Coating is consumed on arrival; a new one is needed to leave. Nami notes the Thousand Sunny lost her bubble coating when the crew reached Fish-Man Island; the crew need a fresh coating to resurface and depart — the hostage-negotiation demand to King Neptune (p. 5). Establishes that a coating is single-use for the descent and must be re-applied to ascend.

• Ch. 616 — a Forest-of-the-Sea shipwright offers to re-coat the Sunny. Den (the late Tom’s merman brother, a Forest of the Sea researcher/shipwright) offers to handle the Thousand Sunny’s coating — “I’ll handle the coating. You can trust me on that” (p. 11) — the re-coating the crew needs to resurface from Fish-Man Island (cf. the Ch. 614 lost-coating demand). See Den.

• Ch. 619 — the re-coating is performed at the Sea Forest. Den (the late Tom’s merman brother) coats the Thousand Sunny at the Forest of the Sea (p. 13) — the re-coating the crew needs for the onward journey (cf. the Ch. 614 lost-coating demand). Coating is rendered in painterly terms here (“canvas… the powers of my pigments”). See Den.
