Toki's Dying Prophecy Casts Nine Shadows Across Twenty Years

Ch. 1048 — the twenty-year frame made literal
The “twenty years” frame is made literal across the chapter: Oden ’s charge to “rebuild the Kozuki clan… when you reach the future” (p. 2) and Toki ’s quoted counsel “there’s a long, cold winter ahead… be patient” (p. 14) bracket the 20-year night the prophecy described.
Fighting in Oden ’s name on the Live Floor, Hyogoro declares with absolute certainty: “that dawn will come to Wano!!! I have no doubt.” A direct on-page restatement of Toki ’s twenty-year “dawn” prophecy, voiced as the raid (the “nine shadows” alliance) is underway.
Oden’s wife (unnamed; shown only in silhouette before the burning castle) speaks in her dying moments 20 years ago: “…and cast nine shadows on the night woven of 20 years… and you shall know the brilliance of the dawn… You are the moon unaware of the dawn… may your purpose be fulfilled.” Orochi reads it as nine samurai ghosts returning on a moonlit night exactly 20 years later — and it has now been exactly 20 years.
Partial same-chapter payoff: Kin’emon ’s p. 17 reveal that five retainers crossed 20 years through time literalizes the “nine shadows / night woven of 20 years” (see The Kozuki Time-Leap ). The “nine shadows” map onto the Akazaya Nine status: pending.
Orochi recites the prophecy at his banquet: “Oden’s will yet lives ,” and this — the 20th year since Oden ’s death — is the year the Akazaya Nine Kin’emon ) return to take the shogun’s head and “return the Kozuki name to power .” A dead character’s prophecy laying out the arc’s endgame; it drives Orochi’s paranoia.
Three of the nine retainers — Kawamatsu , Kiku , Raizo — are confirmed alive and converging 13–20 years on, declaring “We are not mere ghosts and memories!!! ” The Beasts guards realize “this makes it sound like Orochi’s ramblings were true” — the surviving Kozuki vassals returning, as Toki foretold.

In the Oden-execution flashback, Kozuki Toki speaks the prophecy in full: in ~20 years the figures of a great war “will muscle their way into the New World,” “there will likely be a massive war terrible enough to split the seas themselves,” “a long winter will settle over Wano,” and “they are the ones who can strike down Kaido .” The clearest direct statement of the twenty-year vengeance/liberation prophecy.

Why this matters
A dialogue-from-dead-character + fairy-tale-overlay seed: a dying prophecy framed as folklore (“the moon unaware of the dawn”) that the Shogun treats as a literal ghost-curse, while the reader is handed the rational mechanism (a time-leap) in the same chapter.
