- Name meaning
- 兎丼 reads 'Udon' — a homophone of うどん, the thick Japanese wheat-flour noodle, fitting Wano's food-named regions. The chosen kanji are themselves a food/animal pun: 兎 (*u*) = 'rabbit/hare' + 丼 (*don* / donburi) = a 'rice-bowl dish' — i.e. 'rabbit rice-bowl,' a dish-name that lands phonetically on the noodle. Same playful ateji habit as sister-region 九里 'Kuri,' which is written 'Nine Ri' but heard as 栗 'chestnut.'
Profile
A region of Wano Country, introduced “THE NEXT DAY, UDON, WANO” (p. 12). Site of the Prisoner Mines — a forced-labor weapons forge run by Kaido & Shogun Orochi’s men (“Your lives belong to Shogun Orochi!!”; “Make tougher, stronger weapons, and the capital will flourish!!”). Prisoners are worked “to death” until their spirit breaks and they swear loyalty to Kaido; a poison-fish cage is used for executions. Luffy is imprisoned here Ch. 924, where Eustass Kid is already held (pp. 12-15).
Etymology
Etymology done . The region is written 兎丼 (read “Udon”) — a homophone of うどん, the thick Japanese wheat-flour noodle, in Oda’s Wano food-named-region pattern. The kanji are a layered pun in their own right: 兎 (u) = “rabbit/hare” + 丼 (don / donburi) = a “rice-bowl dish,” giving a literal “rabbit rice-bowl” that phonetically becomes the noodle. Mirrors sister-region 九里 “Kuri” (written “Nine Ri,” heard as 栗 “chestnut”). See frontmatter etymology.
