Summary
Still framed as the young Kozuki Oden’s wandering years, the chapter is presented as a series of excerpts from Oden’s own travel journal. Leaving Hakumai (where his antics exasperate the locals, Lord Yasuie defends him, and Orochi accuses him of pocketing money he never stole), Oden tours Wano causing trouble and gathering misfits: in Ringo the starving urchin brothers Izo and Kikunojo, sons of an arrested dance master; in Kibi the hair-stealing “Goblin” Kanjuro; the rejected ex-Oniwabanshu ninja Raizo; and finally the lawless land of Kuri, ruled by the monstrous Ashura Doji under the law “enter freely, die if you leave.” Oden busts through Kuri’s gate alone and, in a battle lasting a full day and night, beats every ruffian — Ashura included — into submission, declaring he will be their king. He tames the wasteland into a home, and in recognition Shogun Sukiyaki retracts his disownment and grants him the title Daimyo of Kuri. Oden refuses stuck-up noble vassals, instead taking his reformed ruffians as his samurai.
