Summary
After the Thousand Sunny rode a waterfall up into the New World — scattering the crew, with Sanji leaping clear carrying Nami and Carrot — Luffy is washed up alone on the beach of Kuri in the Land of Wano, his clothes empty and a vivre card he was carrying lost to the sea (pp. 5-6). He stumbles into a fight: a komainu lion-dog, Komachiyo, is brawling a wild mountain baboon while Beasts-Pirate officials try to arrest a little girl as “a servant of the wicked Kozuki clan” and haul Luffy off as a “manual laborer” (pp. 6-8). Luffy thrashes them, and when the baboon roars at him, a single glare makes both beasts wilt and slump (pp. 9-10). The girl — Otama — pops a piece of her own cheek into a millet dumpling and feeds it to the baboon, instantly taming it as her new friend, Hihimaru (pp. 11-14). She names the land (Kuri, Wano) (p. 12), explains the law that broke her, and takes Luffy to her ramshackle home to feed him the last of her rice (pp. 13-16). Her furious master bursts in: Otama is so poor she eats rice only twice a year, and Luffy has devoured the rice she’d bought for her eighth birthday (pp. 16-18). Worse, the rivers of Wano are poisoned by Kaido’s factory, and the hungry Otama drank river water to quiet her stomach (p. 19). She begs to repay her debt to “big bro Loo-fee” because he saved her life — and reveals she has waited here all this time for a pirate named Ace who promised to return (pp. 19-20). Out on the coast, the Animal Kingdom Pirates’ Headliner Basil Hawkins orders the signal held back from Kaido and declares: “I will go” (p. 20).
New reveals
- Wano, on the ground. The crew’s far-forward destination is finally walked on-page: Luffy lands on the beach of Kuri in the Land of Wano (pp. 4-6). (Whether Wano’s first on-page panel is here or an immediately-preceding chapter is a within-window reconcile question; this chapter is the first to name (Otama names Kuri/Wano on p. 12; Luffy’s “Did I make it to Wano…?” thought, p. 6) and ground-level depict Kuri.)
- Otama’s power. Otama pops a fragment of her own cheek that becomes an edible dumpling; any animal that eats one is tamed to total loyalty (Hihimaru obeys “shake,” then eats it). The fruit is not named on-page (pp. 11-14).
- Hawkins is a Headliner. Basil Hawkins now serves Kaido’s Animal Kingdom Pirates at the rank of “Headliner.” His underlings patrol Kuri’s coast hunting illegal arrivals and lost surveillance signals (pp. 7, 20).
- Wano is occupied and oppressed. Serving the Kozuki clan is a crime punishable by sale to the pleasure district or prison; offenders become forced “manual laborers”; the poor are rationed rice only on their birthday and New Year (pp. 6-7, 18).
- Poisoned rivers. Kaido’s factory dumps waste into Wano’s rivers; the water is effectively poison, and starving Otama drank it (p. 19).
- Otama knew Ace. She is waiting for “a pirate by the name of Ace” who “promised he would come back to her” (p. 20).
Foreshadowing seeds planted
Payoffs (seeds from earlier chapters that resolve here)

- Animal Kingdom Pirates: Basil Hawkins (revealed as a Headliner), unnamed Beasts-Pirate officials/footmen; Animal Kingdom Pirates.

Notable panels
- Pages 1-2 — Color spread (double-page): the Straw Hats (Franky, Luffy, Brook, Sanji, Nami + Carrot the cat) sprinting through a candy/cake-themed townscape under a rainbow “ONE PIECE” logo — a celebratory WCI-escape spread. Reads as decorative; no clear forward foreshadow.
- Page 3 — Volume-edition “Previously in One Piece” recap page (Roger silhouette + Luffy/Big Mom/Kaido portraits). Not a cover story.
- Page 4 — Chapter title splash: “Adventure in the Land of Samurai”; the komainu-vs-baboon brawl on Kuri beach.
- Pages 9-10 — Luffy’s glare makes the wild beasts wilt/slump (casual Conqueror’s Haki).
- Page 11 — Otama title-card (“OTAMA”); she pops her cheek into a dumpling.
- Page 14 — Title-cards for “New friend HIHIMARU” and “Komainu (lion-dog) KOMACHIYO.”
- Page 19 — The poisoned-river reveal: Kaido’s factory runoff; Otama collapses after drinking it.
- Page 20 — “A pirate by the name of ACE!!” cliffhanger; Basil Hawkins title-card (“ANIMAL KINGDOM PIRATES, HEADLINER, BASIL HAWKINS”): “I will go.”
Open questions raised
- Whose vivre card did Luffy lose to the sea, and will its loss matter for the crew’s rendezvous?
- Who is Otama’s unnamed “Master”?
- What is the name of Otama’s Devil Fruit, and how far does its taming power reach (could it turn Kaido’s animal/SMILE soldiers)?
- How and when did Ace meet Otama in Wano — and how will Luffy tell her he is dead?
- What exactly does Kaido’s factory produce, beyond the poison it dumps into the rivers?
