Firsts
  • First on-page footing in the Land of Wano proper — Luffy washes ashore on the beach of Kuri after the Thousand Sunny's waterfall climb scatters the crew
  • Otama debuts — a starving Kuri girl with a Devil-Fruit power that pops edible dumplings from her cheek and tames any animal that eats one to absolute loyalty (fruit unnamed on-page)
  • Komachiyo (a komainu lion-dog) and Hihimaru (a wild mountain baboon) debut as named animals; Otama tames Hihimaru with a cheek-dumpling
  • Basil Hawkins is revealed as a Headliner of Kaido's Animal Kingdom Pirates, patrolling Kuri's coast for intruders
  • Wano under Kaido is a police state: rivers are poisoned by Kaido's factory, serving the Kozuki clan is a crime, and the poor (like Otama) are rationed rice only twice a year
  • Cliffhanger: Otama is waiting at Kuri for a pirate named Ace who promised he would come back to her

Summary

After the Thousand Sunny rode a waterfall up into the New World — scattering the crew, with Sanji leaping clear carrying Nami and CarrotLuffy is washed up alone on the beach of Kuri in the Land of Wano, his clothes empty and a vivre card he was carrying lost to the sea (pp. 5-6). He stumbles into a fight: a komainu lion-dog, Komachiyo, is brawling a wild mountain baboon while Beasts-Pirate officials try to arrest a little girl as “a servant of the wicked Kozuki clan” and haul Luffy off as a “manual laborer” (pp. 6-8). Luffy thrashes them, and when the baboon roars at him, a single glare makes both beasts wilt and slump (pp. 9-10). The girl — Otama — pops a piece of her own cheek into a millet dumpling and feeds it to the baboon, instantly taming it as her new friend, Hihimaru (pp. 11-14). She names the land (Kuri, Wano) (p. 12), explains the law that broke her, and takes Luffy to her ramshackle home to feed him the last of her rice (pp. 13-16). Her furious master bursts in: Otama is so poor she eats rice only twice a year, and Luffy has devoured the rice she’d bought for her eighth birthday (pp. 16-18). Worse, the rivers of Wano are poisoned by Kaido’s factory, and the hungry Otama drank river water to quiet her stomach (p. 19). She begs to repay her debt to “big bro Loo-fee” because he saved her life — and reveals she has waited here all this time for a pirate named Ace who promised to return (pp. 19-20). Out on the coast, the Animal Kingdom Pirates’ Headliner Basil Hawkins orders the signal held back from Kaido and declares: “I will go” (p. 20).
