The seed

Baldimore is revealed as Vegapunk’s childhood home, crowded with his inventions. The locals state he “outstripped existing technology,” his blueprints are “a couple of hundred years ahead of their time,” and he is now the Navy’s leading scientist — “a treasure for all humanity,” with everything in his lab deemed “of vital importance to the whole world.” A heavy explicit setup for the scientist who will loom over the back half of the series. Seed planted @0592, pp. 12-14.

The payoff

(Pending — payoff forward of this batch’s window: Vegapunk’s centrality pays off far-forward at Egghead.)

Earliest known caller

(TBD.)

Why this matters

A chekhov-explicit load: the narration spends an entire interlude pre-establishing Vegapunk’s genius and the world-importance of his lab, long before he appears in person — a structural promise that the scientist will be central to the series’ technology and endgame.
