Chapter 1100: Thank You, Bonney

Summary

A flashback to the bargain that made Bartholomew Kuma a Warlord and a weapon. At Vegapunk’s Egghead lab (with Admiral Kizaru Borsalino and Sentomaru present), the Five Elder St. Jaygarcia Saturn dictates three conditions under which the World Government will fund the cure for Kuma’s daughter Bonney’s disease — the Sapphire Scales: (1) Kuma must join the Seven Warlords as a pirate, (2) become a “human weapon for the Navy” whose augmented body is the model for clone soldiers, and (3) ultimately abandon his mind and free will. Vegapunk protests that emptying a cyborg of its will is “murder, pure and simple,” but Kuma weeps and gladly accepts “any fate” if it cures Bonney. Bonney is to be held hostage by the WG; she is monitored by CP8 agent “Nurse Alpha.” Kuma hides the truth from Bonney — claiming he too is ill so they can stay together — and arranges for her to recover in the church of Sorbet Kingdom under Queen Dowager Conney. After his augmentation begins, Kuma reigns the seas as a feared new Warlord while the wider pirate world (Buggy, Alvida & a young Coby, Ace among the Whitebeard Pirates (who teases the Warlord-ally Jimbei), Boa Hancock, Blackbeard, the Revolutionary Army) reacts to the news. Kuma writes letters to Bonney from the sea — and the government hands him “new orders” in the East Blue.

New reveals

• St. Saturn’s three conditions to have Bonney’s life saved (p.3–5): join the Seven Warlords as a pirate; become a human weapon for the Navy / model for clone soldiers; and “ultimately abandon… your mind and your free will.” (Removing the will “turns it into a simple robot.”)
• Bonney’s disease is named the “Sapphire Scales” (p.7) — a half-year of treatment, with full cure by her tenth birthday; Kuma’s own cyborg procedure takes ~two years.
• Bonney is the WG’s hostage (p.7): once cured she is taken into government custody; her freedom is granted only when Kuma has “fully lost [his] free will”; if Kuma escapes or contacts her, she will be “turned into a slave.”
• Vegapunk performs the augmentation himself (p.5–6), calling it “murder, pure and simple”; Kuma accepts: “Thank you. I will gladly accept any fate… if it means curing Bonney’s disease!!!”

• CP8 (Cipher Pol No. 8) agent “Nurse Alpha” (p.13–14) is assigned to surveil Bonney under cover of being her nurse; she crushes a can one-handed and tells Kuma “a child’s neck can be crushed just like that.”
• Kuma’s lie of love (p.9): he tells Bonney he has a disease too, so she won’t suspect his fate; he and Sentomaru are present at the lab.
• Vegapunk’s “five more of me” (p.9): overwhelmed, he wishes for copies to eat, sleep, and write out his ideas for him — the origin seed of the six satellites.
• Kuma becomes the new Warlord (p.15–16): “as big as Whitebeard,” replacing a vacancy among the Seven; the pirate world reacts. The flashback is dated by a young Coby still serving aboard the Alvida Pirates and Ace/Blackbeard still among the Whitebeard Pirates.
