Chapter 1067: Punk Records

Summary

The Straw Hats finally meet the real Dr. Vegapunk — not the bulb-headed legend, but an aged scientist with an “apple-top” antenna where the storied giant brain should be. He explains he ate the Brain-Brain Fruit: his brain physically swells to hold limitless data, so he long ago cut his head down and now stores his ever-growing brain in Punk Records, a vault on the underside of the island’s eggshell, reaching it remotely by antenna. The six “Vegapunks” the crew has met are satellite offshoots — canonically numbered 01 Shaka the Good, 02 Lilith the Evil, 03 Edison the Thinker, 04 Pythagoras the Wise, 05 Atlas the Violent, 06 York the Greedy — who sync to Punk Records once a day. Vegapunk’s dream: one day all humanity will “share a brain,” a sea of knowledge accessed like one library (Jinbei gently flags the danger of inserting ideology on top). In an earlier confrontation the pirate Jewelry Bonney held him at the point of a failed beam saber, demanding he turn her father — “the mindless weapon of war” Kuma — back to normal, before a giant stag beetle (drawn by the beam) zapped her unconscious. Vegapunk then confesses a buried Wano secret: Momonosuke’s “second dragon” fruit was his man-made creation, grown over 20 years from Kaido’s bloodline elements — the “failed,” pink prototype left behind at Punk Hazard. He also reveals the colossal buried robot is the legendary iron giant that attacked Sacred Mariejois ~200 years ago — built 900 years ago, stopped only because it ran out of energy, its dynamic power source still beyond even his science. Vegapunk asks Luffy to carry him off Egghead (“there’s something I need to give” Bonney). The moment is broken as CP-0, led by Rob Lucci, sails in hunting Bonney; Shaka refuses the World Government entry. Far away at Kamabakka Queendom, the Revolutionary Army is repairing Kuma — when the will-less cyborg suddenly springs to life and runs off, not even knowing why.

• The real Dr. Vegapunk appears in person (p.2-3). He is an old man with a normal head topped by an “apple-top” antenna, not the rumored light-bulb skull. He ate the Brain-Brain Fruit (“I’ve got the Brain-Brain Fruit, so I’m a Brain-Man!!”) — his brain physically grows to accommodate the data it holds (he “was going to be the height of a giant”), giving him “the world’s largest brain, which continues growing to this day” and an “infinite data-bank.” He cut his head down when it grew too big.
• Punk Records (chapter title): the storage space for Vegapunk’s brain, on the underside of the eggshell at the island’s tippy-top. He connects to it across the island via his apple-top antenna (“connect to my brain waves, even at this distance”) (p.3). The six satellites synchronize their experiences and knowledge to Punk Records once every day (p.4).

• Vegapunk’s dream (p.5): if all humanity could access Punk Records, everyone “would essentially share my intelligence” — “think of it like using the same library.” Mutually updating Punk Records would create “a sea of knowledge that far surpasses even my vast intellect,” and “one day, humanity will be able to share a brain.” Jinbei (addressed “first lord of the sea”) asks the cautionary question: “Won’t you have issues if ideology gets inserted on top of everything else?”
• Jewelry Bonney is Kuma’s daughter (p.6). She held the real Vegapunk at the point of a failed beam saber, raging “turn my father back to normal!!” — “[my father,] who you turned into a mindless weapon of war!! Your endless quest for scientific knowledge… will spare no one in its greed!!” The beam’s light attracts insects; a giant stag beetle zaps her unconscious (p.6-7). (VIZ says “father”; the adoptive specifics are not stated on-page here.)
• Momonosuke’s artificial fruit is Vegapunk’s (p.7-8). Asked about Wano’s “second dragon in addition to Kaido,” Vegapunk reveals that dragon’s fruit was “my attempt to grow a man-made devil fruit” — the failed Devil Fruit left at Punk Hazard that Momonosuke ate. He spent 20 years and an exorbitant budget working from Kaido’s bloodline elements; he deems it a failure because the fruit came out PINK and lacked Kaido’s qualities — though the crew note Momo is “the Guardian Deity of Wano now.”
• The buried iron giant’s history (the legendary iron giant, p.9-11): it is “said to have attacked Sacred Marijoa about 200 years ago,” but was actually built 900 years ago. “They say that there was no damage only because it ran out of energy”; “its goal was never understood,” and “no one knows where it came from.” The WG ordered it torn down and destroyed, but scientists’ curiosity kept it (“so it still rests here… and the government is none the wiser”). It climbed up the Red Line to reach Mariejois. Vegapunk built the Vegaforce-1 using it as a guide, but its “dynamic power source” is the one thing even his science cannot re-create — “in the past, they had a power strong enough to rewrite everything we know about the world today.”
• Robin’s historical link (p.10): “two hundred years ago… that was the year… when fish-man discrimination became a big issue” — tying the iron giant’s Mariejois attack to the world’s social history.

Even Kuma doesn’t understand it (“I don’t know!!! What’s going on?!”). The commanders chase him: “This is where our revolution really begins!!”
