Punk Records

Name meaning
'Punk' = Dr. Vegapunk's signature brand prefix (cf. his name ベガパンク Begapanku; his former lab Punk Hazard; the '-punk' of cyber-/steam-punk sci-fi). 'Records' = an archive of recorded data — the literal function: it stores his externalized brain as a searchable 'library' the six satellites sync to daily. Flavour layer: 'Punk Records' also reads as a punk-rock RECORD LABEL, extending the music-tinged 'punk' wordplay across the Vegapunk name-set.

Profile

Punk Records is the externalized brain-storage vault for Dr. Vegapunk — a structure on the underside of the eggshell at the tippy-top of Egghead (@1067 p.3). Because Vegapunk’s Brain-Brain Fruit makes his brain grow without limit, he cut his head down and externalized the ever-growing brain here, connecting to it across the island by antenna.

The six satellites synchronize their experiences and knowledge to Punk Records once every day, so each carries one complete copy of his brain “but they can do six times as much” (@1067 p.4). Vegapunk’s stated dream is to let all of humanity mutually access and update Punk Records — a shared “sea of knowledge,” “one day humanity will be able to share a brain,” like everyone “using the same library” (@1067 p.5).

Etymology

  • Surface meaning: パンクレコーズ Panku Rekōzu — a katakana transliteration of English “Punk Records.” “Records” = an archive of recorded data, i.e. the literal function: the vault stores Vegapunk’s externalized brain as a searchable “library” that he and his six satellites remotely connect to and sync to once a day.
  • Brand layer: “Punk” is Dr. Vegapunk’s signature naming prefix — his own name (ベガパンク Begapanku = “Vega” + the “-punk” of cyber-/steam-punk sci-fi) and his former lab Punk Hazard. Punk Records is one more entry in his “Punk-” branded creations.
  • Cross-pun (flavour): “Punk Records” doubles as the name of a punk-rock record label, carrying the music-tinged wordplay that runs through the Vegapunk name-set. This layer is an inference (the Wiki has no dedicated Etymology section), hence the medium confidence; the “records = data archive” + “Punk = Vegapunk brand” reading is solid.
  • No future-reveal encoding in the name itself — its plot weight (the brain as a WG prize, the “share a brain” dream) is carried by the concept, not the etymology; no Foreshadowing/ entry warranted from the name.
  • Source: Punk Records — One Piece Wiki. Confidence: medium.
