Chapter 1099: Pacifist

Summary

Kuma’s flashback continues. To stop the tyrant King Bekori — who burned villages to “cleanse” Sorbet Kingdom for the Celestial Dragons’ praise — Kuma leads a one-man “solo revolution,” deposes Bekori, and is hailed by the people as King Kuma, ruling humbly out of his old church (with the real administration handled by the former two-generations-ago king, Bulldog, and the queen dowager Conney). His young daughter Bonney, sickly and barred from sunlight, surprises the town by suddenly aging into a Ginny-lookalike adult: she has eaten the Age-Age Fruit. Bekori returns with World-Government-backed Marine warships to retake the throne; Kuma sinks the entire fleet, is branded a pirate with a bounty, and flees to sea — entrusting Bonney to Conney and Bulldog. At sea Kuma reunites with the Revolutionary Army (Betty, who takes the Eastern-Forces command Ginny once held, and Dragon), learning a doctor has given Bonney only five years to live from a disease called the Sapphire Scales. Dragon directs Kuma to the Navy’s scientist, Dr. Vegapunk. At Vegapunk’s lab — the “Naval Science Division, Laboratory 8,” later known as Egghead — Vegapunk agrees to cure Bonney for free in exchange for Kuma’s blood and permission to mass-produce clone soldiers modeled on Kuma’s body, asking pointedly whether Kuma is a Buccaneer. As the deal is struck, an unnamed Celestial Dragon back in sacred Mariejois resolves to seize the clone weapons for the World Government and, mocking the “weak-willed pacifist” Kuma, coins their name: “Pacifista.”

• Kuma’s “solo revolution”: Kuma single-handedly overthrew the tyrant King Bekori of Sorbet Kingdom and became its beloved king, living out of his old church (pp. 2–5).
• Bekori’s atrocity: Bekori burned villages to “cleanse the city of all filth,” for which the Celestial Dragons praised the kingdom (p. 2); a propaganda paper later brands Kuma the “Wicked Dictator” who “seized the throne by burning villages” (p. 8).

• Pacifista origin & etymology: Vegapunk cures Bonney in exchange for Kuma’s blood and permission to make clone soldiers “that look just like me,” built with electromagnetic/laser-firing, shield-hard bodies (pp. 15–16); an unnamed Celestial Dragon in Mariejois decides clones “are weapons” and names them “Pacifista” after Kuma the “weak-willed pacifist” (p. 17).
