Grand Line (second half, beyond the Red Line) · first appeared: Ch. 433
Profile
The second half of the Grand Line, on the far side of the Red Line — “the end of the ocean,” named on-page for the first time by Koby (pp. 7-8). The arena where “the people who can guide the new age are gathering” and the Four Emperors hold sway; Koby and Luffy vow to meet here again, “much, much stronger.” Whitebeard’s ship is shown in the New World (p. 19), where “Red-Haired” Shanks has broken through Whitebeard’s lines to seek an audience.
Key chapters
- Ch. 433 — first mention + first appearance: named by Koby (pp. 7-8); the “New World” caption is shown over Whitebeard’s ship (p. 19).
- Ch. 450 — re-named as the region containing Wano Country: Hogback’s exposition places the legendary samurai Ryuma’s homeland “of the New World” (p. 4). First time the New World is invoked as the origin of a specific named country.
- Ch. 496 — established as reachable from Paradise by exactly two crossings: over the Red Line via Mariejoa (leave your ship) or the seafloor through Fish-Man Island (coat your ship); Sabaody Archipelago is the staging point.
- Ch. 498 — invoked as the rookies’ destination beyond the Red Line: Apoo and Kid agree to “save it for the other side of the wall,” and the narration warns the New World “will be a sea of blood” once this generation pours in (pp. 15, 19).
- Ch. 654 — first physical crossing INTO the New World (the chapter’s title is “A Gam of Whales”). The Straw Hats rise from the Fish-Man Island deep sea up the upward currents, carried by a gam (pod) of Island Whales (Laboon’s home pod), and surface into the New World’s violent weather (pp. 18-19): “a surging ocean of fire,” “seas of red,” gales and storms — far rougher than Paradise. On the way they survive the deep-sea White-Strom (a white whirlpool that resurfaces ships empty). Luffy declares “Bring it on!!” on entering.
