Name meaning
'Gates of Justice' (司法の門 Shihō no Mon) — the World Government's judicial gateway at Enies Lobby. Transparent descriptor: the great doors through which the condemned pass on the way to WG justice. No SBS etymology documented.

Structural lore — what Oda has confirmed about this. Mysteries (unsolved questions) live in Vault/Threads/; this is what the world IS.

First named/described: Ch. 364 (pp. 14-17) · first shown on-page: Ch. 376 (p. 8; mechanism explained pp. 9-10)

What we know

  • Ch. 408 (pp. 16-17): The mechanical route to the Gates is diagrammed. Spandam explains the path to Robin: an underwater passage (current position) leads to the Bridge of Hesitation (the halfway point); after crossing the bridge halfway and opening the gate, “the other half will rise from beneath the sea,” completing the path through the Gates of Justice. Establishes the Gates as a literal point-of-no-return the rescuers must beat the captive to. Cross-link Bridge of Hesitation, Spandam, Nico Robin.
  • Ch. 403 (pp. 17-19): The Straw Hats reach a giant “WORLD GOVT” steel door — an underwater passage Rob Lucci and the captive Robin went through, en route to the Gates. Luffy smashes the door with Gear Third (p. 19). Confirms a controlled-access steel gateway into the WG-side transit route at Enies Lobby. Cross-link Luffy, Rob Lucci, Nico Robin.
  • Ch. 376 (pp. 6, 8-10): ⭐ First SHOWN on-page + full mechanics explained. Kokoro’s hand-drawn map (p. 6) places the Gates of Justice at the rear of Enies Lobby, alongside the Tower of Law, the Courthouse, the Iron Fence, the Island Gate, the Main Gate, and a waterfall at the back. The Gates rise into view (p. 8). Mechanism (pp. 9-10): the colossal doors crack open only a sliver to admit a condemned criminal, and beyond them writhes a nest of Neptunians (Sea Kings) — as around the Grand Line in the Calm Belt — which produces a safe sea-current passage across otherwise-impassable seas. A rescuer must intercept a prisoner before they pass through the Gates, after which the current carries them away. This is the first time the WG’s privileged sea-routing is shown as a deliberate, controlled mechanism rather than ambient geography. The Sea Train Rocketman assault is staged here (the alliance launches the Straw Hats off the train from the Main Gate). Cross-link Calm Belt, Sea Kings, Sea Train, Kokoro, Gates of Justice Neptunian Sea-Current Passage.
  • Ch. 364 (pp. 14-17): First named/described. At Enies Lobby sits a courthouse that is “a court in name only” — anyone walked through its “huge cold steel door” is condemned, and “just being taken to Enies Lobby is considered… proof that you’re a criminal.”
  • Ch. 364 (pp. 15-16): Beyond the door the port reaches only TWO destinations — the Navy Headquarters (“the mightiest summit of the forces of justice in the world”) and Impel Down (the underwater prison). The Gates are framed as “a doorway of despair” through which the condemned “never see the light of day again.”
  • Ch. 364 (pp. 16-17): Reaching Robin past the Gates means “pick a fight with the very heart of the World Government” — escalating the rescue to a direct clash with the WG. Described in exposition only; not shown on-page.

Chronology / structure

  • The World Government’s judicial gateway at Enies Lobby. The condemned pass the Gates one-way toward the two destinations (Navy HQ and Impel Down). The mechanics — the colossal doors opening only a sliver for the condemned, fronted by a Neptunian nest that makes a Calm Belt-style safe sea-current passage — are first SHOWN/explained on-page Ch. 376 (pp. 8-10), no longer forward-canon. The physical gates are first drawn @0376 (p. 8). Part of the WG’s judicial transit infrastructure (the route on to Navy HQ / Impel Down).

Open questions about this topic

  • The physical Gates and how they open — answered on-page Ch. 376 (doors crack only for the condemned; Neptunian-nest safe-current passage). The broader WG sea-routing network (the “back roads” linking Enies Lobby / Impel Down / Marineford) remains a forward thread — see Gates of Justice Neptunian Sea-Current Passage.
  • Characters connected: Paulie (delivers the exposition), Nico Robin (the prisoner conveyed toward them).
  • Related: Enies Lobby · Impel Down · Marines.
  • Foreshadowing seeds about this topic: the Gates / two-destinations exposition escalates the Straw Hats’ conflict into a direct clash with the WG — the keynote of the coming Enies Lobby war.
