Chapter 384: Signal the Counterattack

Summary

At the Enies Lobby main-island gate, Usopp — disguised (masked, addressed throughout as “Sniper King”) to slip past the government hordes and reach his crew (p. 2–3) — runs straight into the island’s two giant gate-guards, Oimo and Kashii of Elbaf (p. 4). The giants pour out their century of grief: they were once pirates who roamed the world for 100 years, until two chiefs began an endless duel on a certain island and the band disbanded; when the giants set out to find them, the Navy told them their two strongest chiefs were imprisoned in a “huge government prison” and offered a deal — guard Enies Lobby’s gate to win their chiefs’ release (pp. 5–6). Giants live 300 years, so they accepted and have stood guard for 50 of a promised 100 (p. 6). Usopp/Sniper King reveals the cruel lie: the two chiefs are Dorry and Brogy, who were never captured — they’ve spent the last hundred years fighting their honor duel on Little Garden (pp. 7–8), and the Straw Hats met them there. Meanwhile the King Bull Gomora, carrying Zoro, Sanji, Nami, Chopper and Franky up the central road under artillery fire, is chained down and felled (pp. 14–16), leaving the crew surrounded. Kokoro radios in over the baby Den Den Mushi: Luffy has climbed onto the courthouse roof, and a drawbridge between the Courthouse and the Tower of Law can be lowered by pulling a lever atop each flanking tower (pp. 11–13). At the Tower of Law, Spandam — having lost track of Luffy — orders the “Eleven Righteous Jurors” released into the town (pp. 9–10, 16). The chapter turns on the giants: realizing the World Government tricked them, Oimo and Kashii defect to the Straw Hats’ side (pp. 17–19), seizing the WG soldiers and roaring “Hurry to your comrades!! Sniper King!!” / “Signal the counterattack!!”

• Gate-giants Oimo and Kashii (introduced @0377–0378) get their backstory: they were once a giant pirate band that roamed the world for ~100 years before guarding Enies Lobby’s gate for the World Government (p. 5).
• The giants’ band disbanded when two chiefs began an unending duel on a certain island; when the giants set out to find them, the Navy captured them and offered a deal (pp. 5–6).
• The deal: the WG claimed the giants’ two strongest chiefs were held in a huge government prison, and that guarding the gate (for 100 years, of which 50 are done) would win the chiefs’ return to Elbaf (pp. 5–6).
