Yokozuna · alive · the giant frog of Shift Station

Profile

A roughly 100-meter giant frog the Straw Hats were hunting (Sanji nicknames the catch “pommes paille / Paille”); shown doing the freestyle crawl across the sea (Ch. 322, pp. 6–7). Named Yokozuna by Kokoro (p. 17): he lives by Shift Station and repeatedly challenges the sea train to a test of strength, and “never runs away” (pp. 17–18). His refusal to flee makes Luffy decide not to eat him (“I’m not gonna eat him then… cool!”, p. 18).

Arc-by-arc updates

Water Seven aftermath (Ch. 431)

  • The giant frog tries to follow the group in; Kokoro: “Not you, Yokozuna! You stay outside!” (p. 9).

Enies Lobby (Ch. 399) — With the Rocketman for the waterfall jump

Enies Lobby (Ch. 390) — Tanks iron-ball hits in the square

  • Rampages through the courthouse-square guards, soaking up direct iron-ball hits (“You’ve taken so many direct hits from that iron ball!!”, p. 9; “…so reckless!!”). Cheered on (“Thataboy, Yokozuna!!”, p. 3). Cross-link Enies Lobby, Franky Family.

Enies Lobby (Ch. 388 — “Gear Two”) — Holding the drawbridge

  • The giant frog blocks the courthouse main door / drawbridge (“Don’t let anyone through, Yokozuna!! Stand strong!”), holding the position (“Ribbit!!!”) so the drawbridge can be lowered to reach the Tower of Law (p. 15). Cross-link Enies Lobby, Franky Family.

Enies Lobby (Ch. 383 — “Luffy vs. Blueno”) — Among the assault force riding the Rocketman

Enies Lobby (Ch. 380 — “Enies Lobby Main Island Express”) — Hurled at the iron fence to help wrench the gate open

Enies Lobby (Ch. 378 — “Casualties”) — Rides the Rocketman to the Enies Lobby gates

Water Seven (Ch. 374 — “Scramble”) — The giant frog leaps onto the tracks in front of the Puffing Tom

  • The giant frog leaps onto the tracks directly in front of the speeding Puffing Tom; the Straw Hats spot him and the train honks/barrels toward him (pp. 3-5). “RIBBIT RIBBIT!!” Cross-link Sea Train.

Water Seven flashback (Ch. 357) — *In Tom’s circle at the trial send-off; named among those who “took care of” Tom

Water Seven flashback (Ch. 354) — *Tom teaches him the “forward crawl”

  • Tom teaches him the “forward crawl” (“I’ll teach you the forward crawl!!”, p. 8) — the in-flashback origin of the giant frog’s signature freestyle swim that, in the present, challenges the Sea Train head-on at Shift Station. Cross-link Tom, Tom’s Workers, Sea Train.

Water Seven flashback (Ch. 353) — *Tom’s pet, 22 years ago

  • Appears in the 22-years-ago flashback captioned “SUMO FROG — TOM’S PET” (“RIBBIT RIBBIT!!”, p. 13) at Tom’s side during the launching ceremony — establishing Yokozuna as Tom’s pet from the flashback era (affiliation += [[Crews/Tom's Workers]]). He later (in the present) guards the Sea Train tracks at Shift Station. Cross-link Tom, Tom’s Workers.

Water Seven (Ch. 322)

Notes

  • Etymology note: 横綱 / yokozuna = the top rank in sumo wrestling — fitting for a brawler-frog who keeps challenging the train.
