Name meaning
'Eirik' is the Old Norse name Eiríkr (the Norwegian spelling, vs. English 'Eric' / 'Erik') — 'ever-ruler / eternal ruler' (ei 'ever, always' + ríkr 'ruler, mighty'). It points to the Viking sea-kings Erik the Red (Eiríkr Raude, who reached Greenland) and Eric Bloodaxe (Eiríkr Haraldsson). A Viking-longship name for the giants' flagship — the vessel is built like a Norse longship with a cow-skull figurehead — fitting Elbaf's wholesale Norse/Viking overlay. VIZ caption renders it 'Great Erik'; the wiki canon spelling is 'Great Eirik'.

Profile

“The Giant Pirates’ ship, the Great Erik” (p. 16) — the giants’ vessel carrying the Straw Hats and the giants from Egghead toward Elbaf; site of the feast (pp. 2-4). Two days out of Egghead it has “yet to reach Elbaf,” and the Thousand Sunny goes missing from alongside it (see The Missing Thousand Sunny and Luffy).

Etymology

  • Surface meaning:Eirik” is the Old Norse name Eiríkr — “ever-ruler / eternal ruler” (ei “ever, always” + ríkr “ruler, mighty”). The “Eirik” spelling (vs. “Eric”/“Erik”) is the Norwegian form.
  • Real-world reference: the Viking sea-kings Erik the Red (Eiríkr Raude, who colonized Greenland) and Eric Bloodaxe (Eiríkr Haraldsson). The ship itself is a Norse longship with a cow-skull figurehead.
  • Theme fit: Elbaf is built on a wholesale Norse/Viking overlay (Yggdrasil tree, warrior culture, the giants’ longships); a sea-king’s name for the giants’ flagship lands squarely in that register.
  • Spelling note: VIZ caption = “Great Erik”; wiki canon = “Great Eirik” (alias recorded).
  • Confidence: high. See frontmatter etymology: block.
