Chapter 1139: Mountain-Eater

Summary

Deep inside the sealed Aurust Castle, Luffy, Zoro, Nami and Usopp — carried by the giant guide Rodo — hunt the key to Loki’s chains before sundown, reasoning that only Chief Jarul or the elders would know its location. In the ruined throne room they find a bizarre magic-circle mark on the floor (“the thing they use in ritual demon summoning”), and Luffy uneasily notes he has “seen something like this lately.” An old man materializes on the broken throne and greets Luffy by name; Rodo panics (“a ghost!!”) and drops everyone. The old man — captioned “Human (former pirate) living in Elbaph — Mr. Ya” — turns out to be the beloved local “Sir Ya,” who sensed “very abnormal Haki” from the castle. He is revealed as the husband of the schoolteacher Ripley and father of the “giant shrimp” Collun (20, half-giant), and he sermonizes cheerfully on history’s many mixed-blood peoples (“Love is free!!”). Pressed on Loki, he warns the crew and drops a bombshell: years ago Red-Haired Shanks was the only man ever to stop Loki, capturing him and putting the chains back on. Daring Luffy to force his way past his warnings, he has Rodo push the throne, exposing a hidden treasure chamber — every chest looted empty by “Sir Ya” the burglar, save one thing no thief would take: the key to Loki’s cuffs. As Luffy reaches for it, the old man’s name-box finally drops — he is SCOPPER GABAN, “the Left Arm of the Pirate King,” a legend who stood beside Roger and Rayleigh, epithet “Mountain-Eater” — and he challenges Luffy: “Then take it from me, if you can!!”

New reveals

• “Mr. Ya” / “Serya” = Scopper Gaban. The human ex-pirate who has lived in Elbaf 20+ years is the legendary Scopper Gaban, “the Left Arm of the Pirate King” — a senior Roger Pirates officer who “stood shoulder to shoulder with Roger and Rayleigh.” Epithet “Mountain-Eater.” (pp. 6, 13.)
• The Mountain-Eater legend. In a Roger-crew flashback: when Roger needed to rest and heal, Gaban (“this other fellow”) went off alone and, with just his two axes, took down hundreds of enemy pirates, leaving only “the bald mountainside… with not a single tree standing.” He and Rayleigh were the two crewmen “especially strong, aside from Roger himself.” (p. 11.)
• Gaban’s Elbaf family. He is Ripley’s common-law husband and the father of Collun — the “giant shrimp,” 20 years old, who “took on a lot of giant’s blood.” Ripley the giantess is 80 and “stays the same age” while Gaban ages (“marrying a giant’s not worth it!!”).
