Chapter 126: Instinct

Summary

The chapter resolves the Wax-Wax House set-piece that has run since Ch. 0117. Picking up the Ch. 0125 cliffhanger, Luffy ignites a flame from Karoo’s burning saddle-rope and uses it to melt the wax — both Mr. 3’s Extra-Special Candelabra wax-armor and the wax-statue prisons holding the crew (FWOOM / WOOOO…). Mr. 3 panics — “You dare to ruin my special candelabra!?” (p. 3) — but the wax runs, and Vivi, Nami, Zoro, and Brogy are freed alive. Vivi (p. 6): “Koff koff!! I can’t believe it! We’re… alive.” Nami: “You’re right. Thanks.”

The freed crew immediately re-enters combat. Usopp fires Exploding Star!!! at Mr. 5 (FWING!!!) — but Mr. 5 catches and swallows it (CHONK!!), gloating that explosives can’t hurt a human bomb. Usopp reveals the bluff (pp. 7-8): “Sorry, but I’m a fibber. That wasn’t a bomb. It was my Deluxe Pepper Sauce Star!!!” — Mr. 5 has eaten a concentrated pepper-sauce capsule and is incapacitated. Usopp follows with a “Flaming… Oni-” fire-projectile; Zoro slashes Mr. 5 down with a flaming sword (-GIRI!!!! / DA-DOOM!!), the fire-projectile affixed to his blade. Mr. 5 (going down): “A burning sword. Not bad…” Zoro (p. 10): “It’s good to be alive. Heh…”

Usopp tallies the felled enemies (p. 11): “Master… only two… left to fight.” — Mr. 5 down, Goldenweek down, Mr. 3 + Miss Valentine remaining (forward: Mr. 3 falls this chapter too, leaving the duo Mr. 5/Valentine — but the on-page count names two with Mr. 3 still standing).

Cornered, Mr. 3 retreats into a freshly-built Wax-Wax Mansion packed with dozens of identical wax statues of himself (DO—OM!! — “Welcome to my Wax-Wax Mansion”, p. 13). He challenges Luffy to find the real him among the decoys: “Now, which is the real me? … Can you tell?” (p. 14). Mr. 3 taunts Luffy with the chapter’s thesis-line: “You’ll never take us. We’re the best brains of Baroque Works. And you’re just a powerful oaf who acts only on instinct.” He boasts “I am Mr. 3!!! I never fail in my mission” and threatens a “dagger in the heart” if Luffy turns his back (SHEEN, p. 15).

Luffy ignores the shell-game entirely — he winds up Gum-Gum… and lands a flying stomp (THWAM!! …STAMP!!!, p. 16) directly on the real Mr. 3, knocking him out cold (THUD!!). Mr. 3, falling, asks how Luffy knew where he was. Luffy answers in a single full-page close-up (p. 17): “Instinct!” — the chapter title delivered as the victory-line. The villain’s contempt-slur is recoded as the hero’s strength.

The Wax-Wax House battle is over. Sanji, however — who left the Going Merry to rescue the crew (Ch. 0125) — never reached the fight. He is found alone at Mr. 3’s abandoned Wax-Wax Mansion tea-table, sipping tea (DOOM, p. 18): “The girls might be waiting for me to save them!! … Maybe I shouldn’t be sitting here sipping tea!! … What’s a nice place like this doing in the middle of a jungle anyway?” A snail with a phone-receiver on its shell begins to ring (RINGGG… RINGGG…). Sanji: “Hey, a telephone snail!!” He answers it as a prank (KLAK…) — “Hello, this is Restaurant Le Crap. … Would you like to make a reservation?” The caller barks: “Stop fooling around, you idiot. You’re late with your report!!” Sanji: “Er… who is this?” The chapter ends on a black close-up of the receiver (the Den Den Mushi mirroring the caller’s scowl): “It’s me. … Mr. Zero.” — TO BE CONTINUED IN ONE PIECE, VOL. 15!

Open questions raised

• Who is on the other end of the Den Den Mushi, and what does Crocodile want from “Mr. 3”? The chapter ends with Crocodile (as Mr. Zero) on the phone demanding a report — but Sanji has answered, not Mr. 3. Forward-canon: Sanji impersonates Mr. 3 and receives Crocodile’s orders, gaining intelligence on Baroque Works’ plans.
• What is the full scope of the Den Den Mushi as Grand Line technology? First appearance establishes the living-snail-phone; the sub-types, range, and security mechanics are not yet shown. Forward-canon: White / Black / Golden / Baby / Visual Den Den Mushi types are canonized far later.
• What was Mr. 3’s overdue report — and what mission did he fail? Mr. 3 boasted “I never fail in my mission” (p. 14) immediately before losing; the call confirms he was late reporting. Forward-canon: Mr. 3’s failure to kill the giants and the Strawhats is the report he never delivered.
