Profile

A tall, gaunt, mustachioed self-proclaimed doctor of Drum Kingdom — the Quack Doctor of the chapter-title (Ch. 141 p. 1; caption-box on p. 10: DR. HIRILUK — QUACK DOCTOR). Wears a long black-and-red cape, a black top hat marked with a white skull-and-crossbones (the cross-bones forming a medical-cross / jolly-roger double-meaning), and carries a doctor’s-bag with a jolly-roger emblem. Coughs heavily (KOFF KOFF KOFF, p. 10) — a fragile-health register suggesting underlying illness.

Operates as a freelance physician outside Wapol’s state-licensed cadre of the Twenty Doctors — and is therefore actively hunted by Wapol’s security force (Ch. 141 p. 12: “It’s the security force!”). Wapol names Dr. Kureha “the last survivor of the great Doctor Hunt” (p. 6) — and turns the king’s castle into a “mausoleum for Hiriluk” (p. 7), implying Hiriluk has died in the years between the flashback and the present-day frame.

Personality and ethic — the Robin Hood doctor

Hiriluk demands payment from the rich and from mobs — counting “40,000… 45,000… 50,000 berries” off a burning-house mob (Ch. 141 p. 10) — but refuses payment from patients: “Don’t insult me. I never take money from patients!! I just want to save you!!” (p. 12). His pharmacology is literally quack: his cure-all — a frog extract (p. 12) — kills or harms his patients off-panel. His patients flee him crying “please don’t… The Twenty Doctors will treat me!!!” (p. 11). Dream — “my medicine will save this kingdom”

On the snow-bridge (Ch. 141 p. 14), Dr. Kureha tells him “everyone on this island despises you” — and Hiriluk replies: “Someday my medicine will save this kingdom!!” The dream is unfulfilled in the flashback. Relationships

Dr. Kureha — antagonist-friend / master-apprentice bond (Ch. 141 pp. 13-14); they are the only two non-Twenty doctors left on the island. They part on the snow-bridge calling each other “young quack” and “old hag” — the “we’ll meet again, young quack” line locks them as a permanent odd-couple pairing. Tony Tony Chopper — first protector. Hiriluk, wounded by the bridge-bomb (p. 14), finds Chopper (the “abominable snowman” the villagers have been hunting) bleeding in the snow (pp. 15-16) and patches him up; when the village mob descends, he physically shields the reindeer with his own body (p. 17). Drum Island (Ch. 153) — Hiriluk’s Cherry Blossoms: posthumous payoff; doctrine spoken in his voice; flag re-raised; Fairy Dust fires from the castle

The chapter is titled after him — Chapter 153: Hiriluk’s Cherry Blossoms (p. 1). Six chapters dead; he is structurally the chapter’s central character.
His doctrine spoken in his voice (p. 13). Sobbing Chopper to Kureha: “Doctor!! It wasn’t just a silly dream, was it? You really did achieve your goal, right? “Nothing is impossible for those who fly the flag of the crossbones!!!”… Say it again, Doctor!!” / “This is it!!! The reaction I’ve been waiting 30 years for!!!” — Hiriluk’s exact Ch. 144 cure-reaction line. The dialogue-from-dead-character beat lands at full force. Kureha responds shadowed (“I did it, Chopper!! My work is a success!!!”) — Hiriluk’s words moving through both his student and his master at once.
His pirate-flag re-raised over Drum Castle (p. 13). The skull-and-cherry-blossom-petals flag destroyed by Wapol’s cannon in Ch. 147 is back over the castle for the send-off. The flag returns at the exact moment the 30-year project pays off. See Hiriluk Flag Re-Raised Over Drum Castle Send-Off.
His Fairy Dust miracle-cure substance is the cannon-loaded red powder (pp. 14-18). Kureha narrates the chemistry: “This red powder is no ordinary dust!!! When it comes in contact with white snow in the atmosphere… brilliant pink snowflakes will fall!!!” (p. 18) — the Fairy Dust handed to Kureha in Ch. 144 is the substance, weaponized as a cannonball, fired across the kingdom. The 30-year cherry-blossom-bloom-on-Drum project Hiriluk announced in Ch. 143-144 pays off — posthumously, through Kureha, exactly as he asked her to. Wapol’s grudging awe (p. 17). The tyrant who killed Hiriluk now slumped in the wreck of his own cannon, watching the miracle: “KAK KAK KAK KAK KAK… what wonders fools create… it’s like a dream…” The kingdom’s old-order tyrant has no answer to a miracle-cure. Pays off the Ch. 142 sick-country, sick-hearts doctrine — the cherry-blossom-snowfall is the medicine for a sick country, and Wapol the sick who recognizes it.
The a man dies when he is forgotten doctrine self-fulfills (Ch. 145). His name is on the chapter title; his doctrine is in Chopper’s mouth; his flag is on the castle; his Fairy Dust is in the air. The chapter is the doctrine’s structural proof.

Drum Island (Ch. 148) — off-page; seeded via flag + flashback fragment + Sanji-recognition

The pirate flag flying beside Drum Castle (pp. 5-7) is forward-canonically Hiriluk’s. Chopper calls it “the doctor’s flag” (p. 15) and defends it. Wapol shoots it down with cannon (KA-BLOOM, p. 7). Luffy picks up the unbroken flag and declares the doctor’s philosophy: “You don’t fly it lightly!!! This flag is a promise of life. …it’s not something to be laughed at or shot at!!!” (pp. 9-10). First on-page present-day reference by Drum’s surviving doctors. The lead Drum doctor among the twenty doctors Wapol forced into his medical research speaks the chapter’s load-bearing Hiriluk line (p. 5): ‘One quack doctor… taught us never to give up hope. We should listen to fools like that more.’ Dalton, frozen-but-alive at Bighorn, agrees. First canon articulation that Hiriluk’s hope-doctrine survives in his pre-conscription students — even those Wapol broke and conscripted carry the never give up hope register. Hiriluk’s Jolly Roger above Drum Castle destroyed (pp. 12, 17). The flag — a small black skull-with-thin-diagonal-cross design distinct from Wapol’s and the Straw Hats’ — has flown above Drum Castle since at least Wapol’s exile-return. But this fellow… hee hee… I have no interest…’, p. 8), Wapol (‘The monster!! Yes, he’s the monster that followed Hiriluk!!!’, p. 8; ‘For turning this sacred castle into a memorial to that bumbling quack… you’ll die first, Dr. Kureha!!!’, p. 10), and Chopper — first on-page Chopper dialogue — defending his name (‘Dr. Hiriluk just wanted to save this country!!!’ / ‘I won’t let you set one foot in this castle!!!’, p. 9).
The Hiriluk memorial inside Drum Castle is operationally on-page. The Ch. 141 mausoleum for Hiriluk characterization (Wapol’s polemic) is recanonized here from Kureha’s own mouth as a memorial to Hiriluk — erecting a memorial (her phrasing) vs. mausoleum (Wapol’s). Kureha installed the memorial inside the castle herself.
The pirate-flag — Hiriluk’s banner of faith — flies over Drum Castle. Wapol (p. 9): ‘And I won’t let you take down… his banner of faith!!!’ — the panel cuts to a wide shot of a black jolly-roger pirate-flag billowing over the castle ramparts (FWAP… DOOM!!). Kureha (and/or Chopper) raised Hiriluk’s flag in place of the burned Drum-Kingdom flag (Ch. 141 lineage now visible on-page). First on-page Hiriluk-banner. Chopper as the monster that followed Hiriluk — Wapol’s epithet (p. 8) canonizes the Hiriluk-Chopper adoptive-relationship in present-day on-page utterance, paying off the Ch. 145 DON’T HURT HIM. Wapol-faction confirms hostility to the Hiriluk-Kureha doctor-lineage. Wapol’s death-warrant (‘you’ll die first, Dr. Kureha!’, p. 10) targets the flag-keeper / memorial-keeper — not the castle-occupier — first. The chapter installs the flag-keeper is the threat combat-grammar.

Drum Island flashback (Ch. 145) — Carrying On His Will: Hiriluk’s death; the forgotten-when-not-remembered doctrine and the old king canonization

Death chapter. Hiriluk is entrapped at Drum Castle by Wapol on a fake summons — that “twenty doctors are sick”. The patients are Wapol’s robed guards encircling the courtyard. Wapol orders Hiriluk’s execution for disobeying the king — a charge that has been outstanding long enough that Wapol gloats “You’ve eluded us long enough!!!” (p. 3).
Reveals he has already drunk poisoned mushroom soup. Chopper, trying to help him, brought back an Amiudake / death-cap mushroom believing it medicinal; Hiriluk drank the soup knowingly to spare him the truth (“Your mushroom didn’t kill me”, p. 8). Refusing to die by Wapol’s hand and refusing to let Chopper see him die by the poison, Hiriluk pivots to his doctrine and his self-detonation.
Articulates the a man dies when he is forgotten doctrine (pp. 6-7): “When does a man die? Is it when he’s stricken with a deadly disease? No. Is it when he’s shot in the heart with a pistol? No. …He is forgotten!!! And the ailing hearts of the people will be healed. I may disappear, but my dream will live on.” The chapter is titled Carrying On His Will — the chapter-title-grammar names what the death-monologue installs. I won’t die… I refuse to die!!!” A legitimate pre-Wapol monarch of Drum existed — not named on-page. Self-detonates atop the castle tower (pp. 9-10) — “WHAT A LIFE IT WAS!!!! HA!!! BLAMM!!!” — the instant Chopper sprints into the courtyard. Last words to Chopper: ”…You old quack… goodbye…” / “THANK YOU, CHOPPER.” (p. 9). The arms-raised mid-blast spire-pose is a candidate visual mirror for later sacrifice-on-a-spire compositions .
The hat-emblem inheritance fully visualized. A single X-cross emblem appears on Hiriluk’s chest panel (white-on-coat), on his white Jolly Roger flag (skull-bearing-an-X composition, pp. 2, 5, 7, 9, 16), on a banner-flag stuck into his doctor’s bag (p. 5), and on the flag Chopper carries in flashback (p. 16). Wapol’s monster mock-prophecy (p. 8) — “Soon, a monster will appear. … Someone will continue my work.” Delivered as ridicule of Hiriluk’s death-monologue; structurally inverted by the chapter to read as a successor-prophecy for Chopper (the monster the townsfolk recoil from, Ch. 134; the monster Wapol’s men label him as on p. 11). Dalton present at the execution. Hiriluk’s monologue addresses Dalton directly (p. 15 — “Don’t you, Dalton?”) — implying a pre-execution friendship between the doctor and the regime-officer. Drum Island flashback (Ch. 144) — Snow Tale: the amiudake-poisoning + cherry-blossom-Fairy-Dust handover; skull-and-crossbones-as-FAITH doctrine articulated; Hiriluk-cured-by-Chopper’s-belief reframing

First on-page articulation of the skull-and-crossbones = symbol of FAITH doctrine (p. 15 flashback panel): “That’s why I’m hoisting the skull and crossbones against every disease there is!!! This flag rejects impossibilities!!! It’s the symbol of FAITH!!!” The Ch. 143 doctrine (Hiriluk’s “When a man hoists a pirate flag, there’s nothing he can’t do!!!”) is now restated with the explicit FAITH keyword. Pre-loads Chopper’s eventual reason for accepting the Strawhat Jolly Roger. The chapter’s central irony: the same skull-and-crossbones is the poison-warning icon next to Amiudake in the recipe-book — both readings simultaneously true. Chopper’s amiudake mushroom soup poisons Hiriluk; Hiriluk fakes recovery (pp. 2-4). Hiriluk gags (GACK!! “It’s terrible!!! Yuck!!!”) then composes himself: “But good medicine always tastes bad.” / “I’m feeling better al-ready!!!” Then erupts as the cure-reaction: “This is it!! The reaction!!! I’ve waited 30 YEARS for this!!! Now I can make cherry blossoms bloom in this island of snow!!!! I’ve done it, Chopper! My work is a success!!” (p. 3). Cherry-blossom-bloom dream articulated explicitly post-cure (p. 3). The Ch. 143 30-year cherry-blossom-bloom-on-Drum project is named after the cure-reaction — the dream is the proof of life Hiriluk wants to leave. Fairy Dust — Hiriluk’s name for his miracle-cure substance (p. 6 — “FAIRY DUST?” / “That is the result of 30 years of research!!! My work has finally borne fruit. Behold the miracle cure that will heal this country.”). The substance is the means by which the cherry-blossoms bloom — passed to Kureha to complete the work. First on-page named.
Terminal-illness clock: “two weeks to live” (p. 6 — Kureha: “You’ve still got two weeks to live.”). The Ch. 143 four days at 5
P.M. without-intervention diagnosis has been mitigated by Kureha’s palliative fooling of the body, leaving Hiriluk a working clock of two weeks. Asks Kureha to inherit the cherry-blossom dream AND train Chopper (p. 7): “I want you to teach medicine to Chopper!!! He wants to be a doctor!!! And one more thing!!!” Kureha on-page refuses (“Don’t be ridiculous!! Why should I do that!!?”) — off-page accepts (p. 9: “I can count on you… I’ve always known I could”). Long-association with Kureha confirmed (p. 9 — “I do know you. Yes… we’ve had a long association…”). The Ch. 0141 / Ch. 0143 master-apprentice register is now grounded in long association — they are old colleagues whose insults conceal mutual respect.
Hunted by Drum’s pre-Wapol-return state apparatus as a homicidal fugitive (pp. 11-12). Officers shout “Capture DR. HIRILUK!!!”; villagers panic “He’s got a bomb!! Run!!”; the rope-way operator: “That doctor’s homicidal!!!” Hiriluk openly lobs a bomb at the rope-way platform (BOOM!!). The pursuers cannot be Wapol’s officers (Wapol is at sea, returning only in Ch. 135) — they are the pre-Wapol-return state apparatus enforcing the Doctor Hunt / only-Wapol-licensed-doctors-are-legal tyranny. Forces Kureha to face Chopper’s mushroom-error — the rope-way pursuit is in fact Hiriluk’s race to die before Chopper sees him die; Kureha realizes the amiudake misidentification on the rope-way platform (pp. 12-15).
Hiriluk’s pre-Wapol-arc home: a snowy-pine forest cabin (pp. 4-5) — distinct from Kureha’s mountain home and from Ch. 0143’s windmill-library inside Drum Castle. The character has multiple workshops/hideouts across the Drum landscape.

P.M.” without intervention, three weeks with palliative “fooling” of the body (p. 7).
30-year cherry-blossom-bloom-on-Drum project established (pp. 3-5). Hiriluk’s life-work is to make cherry blossoms bloom on the perpetually-frozen winter island — ”…Right here!!! Because I’m going to make cherry blossoms bloom… They will!!!” (p. 4); “No one need die of disease ever again!!! Such things do exist!!! Robbery-funded practice / decoy strategy (p. 14). Provides care, extracts payment by force if denied. Patient screams “HIRILUK ROBBED ME!!!” and fires at him; Hiriluk and Chopper escape with the decoy strategy. Editorial caption-debut (p. 10): DR. HIRILUK — QUACK DOCTOR. The chapter is titled Quack Doctor — Hiriluk-centered title-chapter.
Present-day reference (p. 7) — Wapol tells Dr. Kureha: “I’ve turned your castle into a mausoleum for Hiriluk!” — first on-page utterance of Hiriluk’s name; pre-dates the flashback by structural placement. Hiriluk is canonized as deceased in the present-day frame (the mausoleum-language is unambiguous).
Robin-Hood-doctor beat (p. 10): collects “40,000… 45,000… 50,000 berries” from a burning-house mob — and pockets the fees while villagers grouse he is exploiting them.
The frog-extract cure-all (pp. 11-12): treats a sick family father over the patient’s plea (“please don’t… The Twenty Doctors will treat me!!!”); the cure-all is a frog extract injected by hypo-syringe. Hiriluk monologues post-shot: “Could the formula be wrong!? I was sure that frog extract would work!! … Should I have administered it intravenously!?” The pharmacology is literal quackery; the will to heal is sincere. “Don’t insult me. Hunted by Wapol’s security force (p. 12) — “It’s the security force!” opens fire on Hiriluk on sight. He is one of the non-Twenty Doctors holdouts of the Doctor Hunt.
Snow-bridge meeting with Dr. Kureha (pp. 13-14) — Kureha at 133 years old (caption-box: DR. KUREHA (133 YEARS OLD)): “Had you not called yourself a doctor… hundreds of people wouldn’t have suffered from a simple cold. There’s nothing worse than an incompetent physician.” / “Except for the Twenty Doctors, you and I are the only doctors left on this island.” / “That’s my style. You know…” / “But even so… everyone on this island despises you.” / “Save? Don’t you mean destroy!?” / “We’ll meet again, young quack.” Hiriluk parts with “I hope I never see you again, you old hag!!” The bridge is bombed mid-crossing (p. 14) — Hiriluk is wounded.
Wounded, finds the bleeding reindeer in the snow (pp. 15-16): the villagers have been hunting a small blue-nosed antlered reindeer (Chopper) as the “abominable snowman” (“Don’t let him get away!! Corner him!!!” / “Kill him before he kills one of us!!!” / “It’s the abominable snowman!! Shoot him!” — p. 16). Hiriluk to the wounded reindeer: “You’ve been shot! If we don’t stop the bleeding, you’ll die!! … You’re very fortunate, my good monster.”
Shields Chopper with his own body (p. 17) — the village mob arrives; Hiriluk physically blocks the reindeer with his cape and body. First protector-of-Chopper beat — locks the Hiriluk-Chopper father-figure inheritance.

Drum Island (Ch. 139) — implied prior teacher (off-page, not yet named)

Implied as Chopper’s prior teacher in Kureha’s “I’ve taught him all of my medical skills” (p. 19). The I taught him register carries the master-completing-an-apprentice implication — a teacher who finished, not started, the student’s education. Combined with Chopper’s already-existing human-fearing reflex, his already-mature bipedal speech, and his medical knowledge, the chapter implies that Chopper had a prior education and a prior human-trust-relationship before Kureha took him in. Iconography notes

The crooked X-cross on Hiriluk’s hat is the hospital-cross symbol (Ch. 168 p. 20 SBS) — confirmed by Oda. The same crooked-X appears on Chopper’s hat (X-cross = hospital-cross, only it’s crooked). Oda: “Not too many people noticed this, but it’s also on Hiriluk’s head.” The iconography links the dead mentor and the apprentice through the medical-symbol heraldry — first SBS-canonization of the Hiriluk → Chopper X-cross-as-hospital-symbol inheritance.
