The seed

Ch. 141 introduces Hiriluk as the quack doctor whose unfulfilled dream is “my medicine will save this kingdom.”

The chapter does not yet name what his medicine is — but the dream is now planted on-page as a deathbed-coded promise (Hiriluk is mortally fragile, coughing through every scene, and is wounded by a bomb on p. 14). Pre-loads the cherry-blossom-snow climax — the medicine turns out to be aesthetic / spiritual, not pharmacological: the cherry-blossom-snow that falls over Drum at the arc’s end heals the kingdom by restoring its faith / hope / national identity.

The payoff

Why this matters

The chapter’s deliberate disjunct between Hiriluk’s literal quackery (frog-extract cure-all, p. 12) and his idealistic motive (“I just want to save you!!”) is the seed of the payoff’s meaning: Hiriluk’s medicine never was pharmacological — it was always the will to heal. The medicine = cherry-blossom equivalence is a foundational Oda metaphor — physical medicine has limits (Kureha p. 12 of Ch. 140: ‘a deep wound in his heart… that not even a doctor can heal’); the real medicine is symbolic / aesthetic / spiritual. This template recurs forward-canon (Vivi’s Alabasta-rain, Robin’s I want to live, etc.).
