Chapter 139: Enter Tony Tony Chopper

Summary

Cover-art opens the chapter (p. 1): Django’s Dance Paradise, Vol. 11: “Eyes With Heart” — a close-up of Django holding his heart-shaped hypnosis ring with the heart-pendant overlapping one eye, against a giant background DJANGO-logo.

On the Drum mountainside (p. 2), Vivi staggers through the blizzard carrying an unconscious Usopp on her back — they survived the avalanche of the previous chapter. Vivi shakes Usopp awake (“WAKE UP, USOPP!! DON’T FALL BACK TO SLEEP!!”). Usopp, dreaming of a flower-garden, slaps awake and immediately rallies (“NO!! WAKE UP!! USOPP, DON’T DIE!!! TO ARMS, TO ARMS, USOPP’S PIRATES!!”) (p. 3). Vivi spots a shape in the snow — it’s Zoro, also alive, shirtless and frost-shaken (“I-I’m f-freezing and I get c-caught in an a-avalanche. What r-rotten luck.” — p. 4). The three regroup. Vivi reports it’s terrible in the snow country but they need to find out where they are. They reach a town: “This is Big Horn!!” (p. 5).

Big Horn is in chaos (pp. 5-7). Civilians cluster around an avalanche site: “The avalanche buried Mr. Dalton!!” / “But those men won’t let us dig him out!!!”. A uniformed group has appeared — they declare themselves King Wapol’s vassals and threaten anyone who tries to help (“To defy him is death!!!” / “You used to serve under him!! Don’t you even care!!?”). The vassal-thugs declare “Dalton’s dead!!!” and laugh that anybody who doesn’t like it can take them on. Vivi, Zoro, and Usopp arrive into the standoff confused (“What’s going on with you!?” / “Why are your clothes… wha…”); Usopp recognizes the uniforms (“Am I mistaken or didn’t we meet them at sea?”). They click: “Then they’re not our friends, right!? They’re the enemy, all right!” Zoro promptly kicks the lead vassal in the face (KA-WHAM!!!, p. 7) — “Who is that guy!!?” / “Mr. Bushido?” / “GLARE!!” — the brawl is on. “Kill him!!” / “You’re nuts.” (p. 7).

Cut to the mountaintop (p. 8). A massive multi-spired snow-castle looms in the blizzard (“SHWOOO…” / “WOOOOOO…”). A voice asks “Doctor…” — “The antibodies are working.” / “Yes, they should be.” / “So tell me, what made her sick?” / “A Keschia?” / “Correct. You look after her.”. The voices belong to Dr. Kureha and her reindeer apprentice; the patient is Nami, brought up the mountain off-page.

Inside the castle (pp. 9-11) — a room cluttered with alchemical glassware, skull-shaped bottles, jars of bubbling liquid (GLUG GLUG GLUG), tools, a checkered bed. Tony Tony Chopper in his pink X-cross top hat walks bipedally (TMP TMP TMP), carrying a hot-water bag. Nami stirs (GRK GRK). Chopper sets the bag down — Nami’s eyes open. He bolts out of the room (FWUP FWUP) — Nami throws a pillow (WHAM!!) — and Chopper smashes back through the wall (KRASH!!) trying to peek from another angle. Nami: “You’re peeking the wrong way.” — “DUH…” — “I can still see you. What are you, anyway?” / “What a moron.” (p. 11). Chopper, terrified: “Human!!! Get lost!!” From outside: “Stop that ruckus, Chopper!!! By the way, is your fever better?”

Kureha enters with a bottle of rum (pp. 12). She introduces herself to Nami: “Your fever seems to have gone down a bit, girlie!! Are you happy!? Kak kak kak kak! But call me doctor. Kak kak kak kak… I’m Kureha. A doctor.” / “The secret of my youthful appearance!?” / Nami: “I didn’t ask that.”. Kureha tells Nami “You’re in the castle on the mountaintop.” and reports Luffy and Sanji are “sleeping soundly in the next room. They’re unusually tough.”

Kureha shows Nami the wound that made her sick — a small dark bite on her belly (p. 13). She delivers the diagnosis: “You were bitten by an insect called a Keschia. They live in hot, steaming jungles. It’s an infectious tick. Its bite infects the victim with virulent bacteria. Over the course of five days, it ravages the victim. It causes a fever that never drops below 104°F, superinfection, myocarditis, arteritis, encephalitis!! Judging from the bite, I’d say you were infected three days ago. You’ve suffered terribly, but it would’ve been over after the fifth day…” Nami: ”…?” Kureha (p. 14): “…you’d have been dead! Because, if untreated, in two more days… It’s called the Five-Day Sickness!!! But Keschias are supposed to have been eradicated a hundred years ago.” — “Were you traipsing around in a jungle on some prehistoric island with your belly exposed?” / “Lucky for you, I kept a supply of the vaccine just in case.”

Nami tries to leave — Kureha kicks her back into bed (THWAP!! FLOP!!, p. 14): “Stay in bed. Your treatment’s not complete.” Nami protests they’re in a hurry and her fever’s down. Kureha (pp. 15): “Don’t be foolish. You mustn’t underestimate this illness!! The treatment normally takes ten days. You’ll lie here and take your medicine for three more days… do you want your sickness to come back and kill you this time?” Nami: “Three days? But I can’t!! We’re in a hurry!” — “SWUP!!” — Nami tries to bolt — Kureha tackles her (WHUP!! DOOM!!, p. 15): “There are only two ways a patient ever leaves my care… kak kak kak… fully recovered… or dead!!! You’re not going anywhere!”

Outside (KRASH!!, p. 16) — Luffy and Sanji burst awake. Luffy lunges at Chopper (“Wait, Luffy! I’ll cook him up!! It won’t take a minute!” — Sanji): “Hold it, deer meat!!!” / “AAAH!!! HELP!!!” (Chopper). Townsfolk down below stare up at the castle (WAH EEEK!!): “Incredible. They’re up and about already!?” / “And… what is that? Some kind of cute, blue-nosed… talking deer!?” / “Luffy, Sanji!” (Nami, recognizing them). “All the way to the top of 15,000-foot Drum Rock!?” / “That one climbed up here with a girl on his back!!” / “Who are those guys, Chopper?”

Kureha appears on the castle steps (p. 17), taking charge: “Six broken ribs and a cracked spine. Shall I operate on him?” (re Sanji). “This one’s bleeding badly. Boil some water and throw him in it!!” (re Luffy). “He’s nearly frozen. What was he doing dressed like that!?” (re Zoro). “Infection? Yes. And it’s not something local.” She rattles off orders to Chopper: “Chopper, get the phenicol and the cardiotonic. And chialcillin!! The girl’s the most critical. She’s barely alive.” (Note: the “girl” here in the page sequence appears to be a town-civilian patient brought up too; Nami is referenced separately as the recovering one. Cf. p. 17 final panel — “I’ll fix up these blood-spattered kids… and the girl, too. Have no fear.”)

Chopper races to fetch supplies — to civilians: “They’re by Frems.” / “By Frems (my friends).” The dazed Sanji murmurs “Chopper!! Get going!!!”; Chopper grins for the first time: “I’ll take good care of them.” (p. 18).

Then Luffy lunges again (“Get off me, you!!!”): “Hold it, deer meat!! Wait, humans!!!” / “Reindeer don’t talk!!” / “That’s Chopper. He’s your basic blue-nosed reindeer.” / “Don’t you know what he is?” Chopper, lifted overhead by Luffy and about to be eaten (p. 19, full-page panel): “I’M NOT FOOD!!!!”

Kureha’s caption-narration over the page: “He ate the Human-Human fruit… which enables him to do anything a human can do. I’ve taught him all of my medical skills.” The Drum townsfolk recoil (“FIENDS!!!”) — Chopper drops a furious SLAM on Luffy’s head.

• Why does Chopper hate humans so viscerally? “Human!!! Get lost!!” / “I hate you people!!!” — Chopper’s reflex is to fear and reject humans on sight. Forward-canon: he was driven from his reindeer herd for his blue nose, then shot at by humans for being a monster; Hiriluk was the lone exception.
• What is the Hito Hito no Mi classification? Kureha presents it as Paramecia-style (“anything a human can do”), but Chopper’s forms (the four-legged reindeer-base, the bipedal stand-tall human-form, and intermediate hybrid forms) point to a Zoan-family fruit.
