Why this matters

The doctrine is the engine of Chopper’s medical philosophy for the rest of the series. Hiriluk himself dies as the embodiment of the doctrine — his terminal illness is cured by the cherry-blossom miracle his crew engineers, in the only way it can be (he dies happy, with the dream fulfilled). Chopper carries the doctrine into every patient-encounter in the Straw Hat arcs.

The doctrine is also a doctor’s-faith-against-impossibility register that re-keys against Luffy’s I will be King of the Pirates faith-against-impossibility: Oda parallels the doctor’s quasi-religious belief in the curability-of-any-disease with the pirate’s quasi-religious belief in the achievability-of-any-dream. The same chapter that installs Hiriluk’s doctrine also stages the Skull and Cherry Blossoms title-pairing — pirate-icon + miracle-symbol — that names the doctrine’s structural twin.
