Why this matters
The Doctor vocative — used to address Wapol, a man Chopper has no relationship with — is structurally strange and reads as either:
- (a) Hiriluk-vocabulary tell — Chopper grew up calling all adults Doctor because Hiriluk was the only adult in his life. The dead-mentor’s vocabulary continues to shape Chopper’s speech long after his death.
- (b) Instinct-doctor tell — Chopper instinctively appeals to the no-firing-on-the-wounded medical ethic by addressing Wapol as a fellow Doctor, even though Wapol is anything but. The future ship’s doctor’s identity is encoded into his desperation-vocabulary.
Either reading is structurally Chopper-as-doctor-in-instinct. Both readings position the chapter as installing Chopper’s ship’s-doctor identity before the formal recruitment.
