Why this matters
Hiriluk is the off-page architect of the Drum Island arc’s emotional and philosophical structure:
- He gave Chopper the X-cross hat (the doctor’s apprentice mark — seeded in Ch. 134 as wardrobe-foreshadow).
- He gave Chopper the pirates-are-large-spirited-people-who-shrink-your-problems doctrine that makes Chopper join the Straw Hats receptive.
- He gave Chopper the loyalty-to-the-doctor’s-flag that drives Chopper to risk his life against Wapol’s regime.
- His unconventional medicine is the quack doctor register that pre-loads Chopper’s own future ship’s-doctor identity (the ship’s doctor inherits the master’s unconventional approach).
The Ch. 148 silhouette + flag + not-again triangulation is enough to canonize Hiriluk as a real off-page character; the chapter is the Hiriluk install even though Hiriluk is never named. This is the same technique Oda uses for Roger pre-Loguetown (silhouette + dialogue-channel + others’ loyalty) — install the dead-mentor through everyone but the dead mentor.
