Why this matters

The seed. Kureha, Ch. 139 p. 19: “I’ve taught him all of my medical skills.” The I taught him register carries the master-completing-an-apprentice implication — a teacher who finished, not started, the student’s education. Combined with Chopper’s already-existing human-fearing reflex (he runs from humans on instinct) and his already-mature bipedal speech and medical knowledge, the chapter implies that Chopper had a prior education and a prior human-trust-relationship before Kureha took him in.

Why it might matter. Forward-canon: Hiriluk is the self-styled quack doctor who took Chopper in after the reindeer rejected him, claimed to cure any illness, and dreamed of healing the country with cherry-blossoms. His death is one of the most emotionally load-bearing flashbacks in early One Piece. The Ch. 139 “I’ve taught him all of my medical skills” line is the on-ramp that pulls the reader into the Hiriluk reveal in the following chapters.
