Summary
Cover story (p. 1): Django’s Dance Heaven, Vol. 16: Lord of the Dance. Django (afro, hypnosis-ring), flanked by Fullbody and a disco-dome host, raises his joined arms with theirs over a crowd of cheering dancers — the 16th installment of the post-Black-Cat-Pirates Django cover-arc.
At Drum Castle (pp. 2-9), Wapol — who has finally arrived back at his dear castle — finds it occupied. Dr. Kureha sunbathes on the castle wall in a leather jacket; Chopper stands at her side; and a black pirate-flag jolly roger has been hoisted over the ramparts. Wapol launches a screaming charge (GRAAH!! KING WAPOL!!!, p. 2) but Sanji counter-kicks (SHWOOOO, p. 3) — ‘I owe you guys some lumps’ — and Luffy lands a head-butt (DOOM!!, p. 4) — ‘And I don’t have to hold back anymore!!!’. Chess and Kuromarimo bark protocol — ‘How dare you attack King Wapol, the exalted ruler of Drum Kingdom!!!’ — and Luffy is unimpressed (‘A king? Who cares!? You guys stink!!!’). His punch hits Wapol’s quilted body and bounces off (VWOB VWOB); Wapol gloats — ‘You maggots!! You have incurred my wrath!! I’ll eat you alive!!!’ — then immediately leaves to put on warmer clothes (p. 6). Chess explains to a stunned Sanji that ‘basically, he’s a monster… a rubber man’ (p. 7).
Kureha addresses the absent Wapol: she ‘insisted on erecting a memorial to Hiriluk here’ in the ‘rundown heap of rock’ (p. 8). Chopper — silent through the previous twelve chapters — finally speaks: ‘King Wapol, it’s…!!!’ / ‘Yes, he’s the monster that followed Hiriluk!!!’ / ‘Dr. Hiriluk just wanted to save this country!!!’ / ‘I won’t let you set one foot in this castle!!!’ / ‘…his banner of faith!!!’ (pp. 8-9). Wapol returns warm and gleeful — ‘Mwa ha ha… at last, everyone I really want dead is here!!! Show no mercy!!! Kill them all!!!’ (p. 9) — and adds: ‘Once we take care of them… nothing will stand in our way. Dalton is dead. All that’s left is that old insurgent witch… and the Straw Hat gang.’ (p. 7). Wapol announces Kureha is to die first — ‘For turning this sacred castle into a memorial to that bumbling quack… you’ll die first, Dr. Kureha!!!’ (p. 10) — and Kuromarimo launches the attack with Marimo’s Static Cling!!! (p. 10), hurling detachable black hair-pom-poms (WHOOSH… SHOOM) that lock onto Kureha — but she dodges (SHWIP…!!! SHOOM, p. 10) and Sanji moves in: ‘Hey, Afro Man!! Throwing hair? That’s no way to treat a lady.’ (p. 11).
Kuromarimo turns the Static Cling on Sanji and Luffy (FWIP FWIP FWIP / WOING WOING WOING, pp. 11-12) — ‘It won’t come off!! What’s with this stuff!?’. The hairballs stick. Sanji: ‘Hey, Reindeer!! Don’t just stand there!! Help!!!’ (p. 12), and Chopper helps Luffy and Sanji peel them off.
Cut to Nami inside the castle (p. 13). She wakes in a four-poster bed under a checkerboard-floor turret room — ‘It’s cold. Where are my clothes?’ — and hears the fight. Kureha (off-panel): ‘Nah. Go back to sleep.’ Nami insists ‘I’m not talking about the weather!’ and goes out into the cold to investigate. Outside, she finds Chopper shivering and lends him her jacket (‘You can wear my jacket.’ / ‘But it doesn’t look cool.’) — Chopper: ‘You think so?’ (p. 13) — establishing Nami and Chopper’s first interaction.
Chess explains the trick (p. 14): the Static Cling hair is extremely flammable — the hairballs were only a distraction — and Chess fires a flaming arrow (KREEK… SWOOSH… FWOM!!). Luffy and Sanji break free in the snow (‘HOT!!! SNOW, SNOW!!!’ / ‘And I was bait!!!’ / ‘Get off this island!!!!’).
Wapol launches at Kureha (p. 15) and Chopper grabs Wapol’s feet — ‘Luffy!!! Stretch out and grab my feet!!’ / ‘Like this!?’ / ‘Now don’t let go!!!’. Open questions raised
- Who was Dr. Hiriluk? Named on-page for the first time as a deceased quack doctor who just wanted to save this country, whose memorial Kureha built in Drum Castle, who Chopper followed. His backstory, his relationship with Kureha, his cause of death, the meaning of the banner of faith — all unresolved.
- What is the Munch-Munch Factory? Wapol’s exit-threat names an escalation-tier of his Baku Baku no Mi power, not yet shown on-page.
- Is Dalton actually dead? Wapol believes Dalton is dead (p. 7). The villagers in Bighorn last saw Dalton wounded; no body yet shown. The Bighorn-resistance status is ambiguous.
- What is Chopper, exactly? Chopper speaks, reasons, has opposable thumbs, and is loyal-to-a-doctor — but he is a reindeer captioned as Kureha’s reindeer. The Devil Fruit is not yet named. The arc has not yet asked what his fruit is.
- Why is Kureha occupying the king’s castle? Chess says it was foolhardy of [her] to move into the king’s castle. Kureha’s motive is framed entirely as Hiriluk-memorial-keeping — insisted on erecting a memorial to Hiriluk here — implying she did this after Hiriluk’s death, against the king’s prerogative. The when/how of the occupation, and whether Wapol’s faction has tried to dislodge her before, are unresolved.
- What is Hiriluk’s banner of faith? The phrase frames the jolly-roger flag as a creed. The arc has not yet told us what dream Hiriluk believed in.
- How will Nami react to Chopper? Their first interaction is the jacket-loan. Whether Nami yet realizes Chopper can speak (the off-panel beats suggest no) is unclear.
